About Nassau County, NY 55+ Communities…
Many hamlets and villages include senior living communities for their residents aged 55 and above, and Nassau County alone has 48 active adult communities, composed of condos, townhomes, and single-family homes. Thirty of these communities are targeted to people aged 62 and up, with some of them being part of the Golden Age Housing program and offering more inexpensive housing. The rest, including a Life Plan Community, also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), require a lower minimum age of 55.
While many of these developments are modest and have comfortable community homes, priced reasonably, in well-kept neighborhoods with limited amenities, others are sprawling complexes with more impressive two-bedroom homes in a country club setting that offer resort-style living. About 13 of these adult housing developments feature gated communities for enhanced privacy and security, while about 25 have clubhouses for their residents’ recreational and leisure activities.
Most communal amenities, such as a fitness center, spa, game rooms, and a variety of other facilities, are located in the clubhouses, and their use is often included in the monthly HOA dues. There are outdoor or indoor pools in 21 of these adult communities, and tennis courts in six of them. Without having to move to a different facility, the Life Plan community in Port Jefferson offers single-level apartments for independent living, assisted living, and memory care, as well as supportive services.
Nassau County has several housing options to offer the adult population who helped develop its towns and villages, whether they want to downsize, live almost maintenance-free, be in the company of similarly aged folks, or all of the above.
