Amityville NY Homes for Sale

Amityville is a village in Suffolk County’s Town of Babylon on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. True to its name, it has come to be known as “the Friendly Bay Village” with amiable residential neighborhoods, beautiful beaches and parks, a boating culture, and a flourishing, walkable downtown shopping and business district.

Local Area Information

Amityville is an incorporated village on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, in the southwest Town of Babylon in Suffolk County along the Nassau-Suffolk County line. It is bordered by North Amityville on the north, Copiague on the east, and East Massapequa in Nassau County’s Town of Oyster Bay on the west. The Great South Bay offers fabulous water views to the southern segments, which are bisected by several canals and lined with many waterfront properties.

The early settlers primarily engaged in farming, fishing, and boating, until the idyllic seaside village became a summer hot spot for artists and affluent Manhattanites at the turn of the 20th century. The waterfront farms and marine facilities were eventually replaced by hotels and large homes to accommodate the summer guests attracted to the comforts offered by the bay with its beaches and cool breezes. In 1894, Amityville became the second community to be incorporated as a village in the Town of Babylon.

The village’s main drag is Broadway, a vibrant consumer and business corridor, though there is also a host of shops, dining options, and other commercial businesses that line Merrick Road. The residential zones comprise single-family homes, condos, and co-ops, some of which may be rentals or luxury homes, have pools or large lots, or located in gated communities, such as Newpointe Estates and Village Estates, which is also a 55+ community. All properties use the Amityville, NY 11701 ZIP code.

The village is sister cities with Le Bourget, a commune in the suburbs of Paris, France. One of the events held in the village is the Amityville Historical Society Annual Heritage Fair, which offers fun and entertainment through the Amityville Trolley Ride, food, merchants, and enjoyable activities for the children.

The village is around 35 miles southeast of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Amityville Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and three minutes to an hour and 56 minutes via the Southern State Parkway, Northern State Parkway, or Long Island Expressway.

The Amityville Beach Complex has a bathing beach as its main attraction, and also offers a fishing pier, showers, restrooms, a concession stand, and other beach amenities. There is also the Amityville Beach Pavilion, which the villagers may rent, as well as ample parking space. The beach is located at the southern end of South Bayview Avenue, next to the James A. Caples, Sr. Memorial Field.

Avon Lake, or Avon Manor Pond, provides villagers with a rest area on landscaped grounds with lots of greenery and some benches overlooking a serene lake. It is located between East and West Lake Drives, near the Amityville Memorial High School.

James A. Caples, Sr. Memorial Park is a waterfront park containing a boat ramp, playground, the Village pavilion, soccer fields, lighted softball fields, and a concession stand. Located at the southern end of South Bayview Avenue, the park is the center of waterfront sports and activities, such as swimming lessons, sailing, and supervised swimming.

Nautical Park has a bandshell and serves as a waterside venue for concerts, art shows, and for residents to get some sun. It also has a few benches along walking paths, and is located at the southeast corner of Merrick Road (NY-27A) and Ocean Avenue. The park was part of the revitalization efforts of the village to clean up the place.

Pearsall Park is a small oasis that provides residents with a natural resting and seating area. The park’s gazebo, pergola, and lush greenery on beautifully landscaped grounds also provide a scenic backdrop for wedding and social media photography. The park is located on Bayview Avenue, between Bedell Place and Towne Street.

The Schools

The village is served by the Amityville Union Free School District, which has five public schools: three elementary, a middle and a high school. The district has the Northeast School for pre-K and kindergarten students, Northwest School for kindergarten to 2nd grade, and Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School for grades 3-5. The district students then go to Edmund W. Miles Middle School, then Amityville Memorial High School next.

The school district also serves North Amityville, as do the Copiague Union Free School District and Farmingdale Union Free School District.
