Aquebogue NY Homes for Sale

Aquebogue is a riverside community in the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, on the East End of Long Island, New York. It is located on a peninsula referred to as the North Fork, deemed to be the mellower counterpart of the Hamptons on the South Fork but nonetheless as appealing. The neighborhood features a lush vineyard and a number of bountiful organic farm fields and evokes an idyllic New England village vibe.

Local Area Information

Aquebogue is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the southeast Town of Riverhead, nestled on Flanders Bay on the Peconic River, Long Island’s longest river. It shares land borders with the hamlet of Riverhead on the west, Jamesport on the east and Northville on the north. Its boundaries are marked by Tuthills Lane and Washington Avenue on the east and Cross River Drive on the west.

During the late 17th century, as the township of Riverhead was first settled by Europeans, the entire region was named Aquebogue, meaning “cove place” or “head of the bay” in the Algonquin language. As the population grew and communities began to form with their own identities, the name Aquebogue was adopted by this quiet hamlet, which was established around 1758.

Single-family homes are the predominant components of its residential districts, along with some condos. About a sixth of the community occupies gorgeous coastal land; thus, the real estate inventory includes plenty of waterfront homes affording marvelous water views. A number of houses have pools and first-floor bedrooms, and there are 4-bedroom homes or larger, luxury residences on expansive lots, rentals, horse properties and new constructions. There is also a 55+ community known as the Aquebogue Mobile Home Court.

Aquebogue lies within the North Fork of Long Island American Viticultural Area (AVA), a designated grape-growing region with more than 40 wineries and 3,000 vineyards, one of which is Paumanok Vineyards on the picturesque Main Road (Route 25). Also along this major thoroughfare and throughout the community are a number of shops, farm stands, cafés, farmers’ markets, marinas and dining options, such as the North Fork landmark Modern Snack Bar.

The area is about 80 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It uses the Aquebogue, NY 11931 ZIP code and is about 35-45 minutes from the Cross Sound Ferry in Orient, NY, providing year-round ferry services across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut.
