Local Area Information

Asharoken is a village in the Town of Huntington in northwest Suffolk County, along the North Shore of Long Island, New York. It lies on a picturesque isthmus that connects the village of Northport on Long Island’s “mainland” to the hamlet of Eatons Neck. Much of Asharoken is on the Long Island Sound on the north and east side, while Northport Bay is on the south side.

With an area of 1.47 square miles, excluding water, Asharoken was the second smallest of the four villages in Huntington Town in the 2020 U.S Census. The community began sometime during the turn of the 20th century with Asharoken Beach, a development that attracted a lot of upper-class families to the area. Asharoken Beach flourished into a summer resort for elite families by 1915, and to have greater control over their roads and beaches, property owners incorporated the village in 1925.

Asharoken is one of the affluent communities that make up an area known as the “Gold Coast” North Shore of Long Island, in which several wealthy families built stately homes and expansive estates beginning in the 19th century. A fine specimen of these homes is the 1862 Delamater-Bevin Mansion, which French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry rented during World War II and where he wrote much of his famous children’s book The Little Prince. This 22-room mansion is now in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Asharoken, NY 11768 ZIP code generally comprises single-family homes, most of which are either waterfront properties, luxury homes, have great water views or beach and docking rights, or all of the above. Some homes are put on the market as rental properties. The village of Asharoken’s own police force protects and patrols the community, including its waters.

Asharoken is approximately 41 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Northport Station via the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, with Huntington Station as an alternative for fewer train transfers. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour and 22 minutes to an hour and 38 minutes via the Northern State Parkway or Long Island Expressway.
