Local Area Information

Atlantic Beach is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is located on the western tip of the protective barrier island of Long Beach, which it shares with a city also named Long Beach, as well as the neighborhoods of East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, and Point Lookout. These seacoast communities lie between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Reynolds Channel to the north and afford captivating water views nearly all around.

Atlantic Beach was initially developed in the 1920s as a resort destination that would compete with Long Beach City. Within that decade, a number of the area’s legendary beach clubs were established, which, along with its beaches and the nightlife in nearby Long Beach, turned the region into a popular summer getaway for many celebrities and socialites, earning it the moniker the “Palm Beach of New York.”

Atlantic Beach was incorporated as a village in 1962 when the township of Hempstead tried to open its beaches to all town residents. By the 1980s, many of its summer residents, seeking retreats farther from the city, moved to the Hamptons and were replaced by primarily middle-class families, transforming the village into a family-centered year-round residential community.

The Atlantic Beach, NY 11509 ZIP code has often ranked among Forbes Magazine’s roll of Most Expensive ZIP codes, and several times been named one of America’s richest beach towns by 247wallst.com and USA Today. Single-family homes, rentals, luxury houses with pools, and new constructions are just some of the property types that line its streets, which are named alphabetically after the New York State counties. The waterfront homes fronting Reynolds Channel are highly valued for their relatively large lots and fabulous water views.

Atlantic Beach is about 22 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Inwood Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Far Rockaway Branch and the Long Beach Station via the Long Beach Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 13 minutes to an hour and 35 minutes via the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

There is also the Inwood Beach Club, which is part of the Inwood Country Club, and The Shores, located down the block from The Shores West.

The Silver Point Beach Club, which offers over 100 acres of beachfront facilities and is the largest in the village, the Sun and Surf Beach Club, which also features an Olympic-size pool, and the Sunny Atlantic Beach Club are among the other popular beach clubs in the village.
