Babylon NY Homes for Sale

Babylon is a village in the eponymous township in Suffolk County on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Shopping, dining, nightlife, beachfronts, marinas, parks — Babylon seems to have it all, making it one of the top destinations for visitors and home buyers on Long Island’s South Shore.

Local Area Information

Babylon is a quaint upscale suburban village in the township also named Babylon on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, along the Babylon-Islip Town line in Suffolk County. It is bounded by West Babylon on the west, North Babylon on the north, and Islip Town’s West Islip on the east. The south side overlooks the Great South Bay and is intersected by a number of canals, alongside which are plenty of waterfront properties with boat docks and fine water views.

Once part of the Town of Huntington known then as Huntington South, the area became a flourishing resort town with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the 1860s with as many as 11 hotels at one time. In 1872, the southern part of Huntington Town officially separated from the north, and Babylon was incorporated as a village in 1893. Housing developments rocketed in the village after World War II when veterans returned and year-round homes became more in demand.

The residential areas are composed of single-family homes and multifamily houses, some of which may be rentals, potential mother-daughter, new constructions, or luxury homes on spacious lots with pools. The village uses the Babylon, NY 11702 ZIP code.

Babylon’s walkable downtown area on and around Deer Park Avenue and Main Street has always drawn ambling shoppers with its wide variety of fine restaurants, bars, boutiques, and micro enterprises. Consumers can shop small and shop local or shop big in the city with the convenient and direct LIRR line to Manhattan. Locals have ample options for pubs and clubs, while those who love the water have the tranquil Argyle Lake and the village docks. The latter is favored by fishers, crabbers, and boat and sailing enthusiasts.

The village is approximately 40 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Babylon Station via the LIRR’s Babylon and Montauk Branches. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 21 minutes to an hour and 33 minutes via the Southern State Parkway, Northern State Parkway, or Long Island Expressway.

Beaches & Parks

Argyle Park is an iconic village park famous for its lovely waterfalls and the calming effects of its waters and of the expansive main lake within the park. Above and around the falls are steps and viewing decks with white railings where one can survey nature all around. The park is a favorite venue for various ceremonies, such as weddings, graduations and proms, and for taking pictures and leisurely strolls. Around Argyle Lake is a looped trail for walking, jogging and biking.

Southards Pond is a sizable park that has 19 acres of undeveloped woodland with a main pond, and filled with nature trails over and around streams and tunnels for jogging, biking and horseback-riding. The 2.3-kilometer Southards Pond Park Loop is a loop trail with usually moderate traffic of hikers of all skill levels, bird watchers and nature trippers. The trail offers scenic views and is dog-friendly, and so is the rest of the park.
