Bay Shore NY Homes for Sale

In the late 19th century, Bay Shore became known for its shopping district, resorts with white sand beaches on the Great South Bay and the nearby Fire Island’s fishing villages, attracting wealthy New Yorkers who leveraged the newly built railroad. After World War II, its population grew significantly, and many housing developments replaced farms and woodlands, with progress continuing well into the 20th century and beyond.

Local Area Information

Bay Shore is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Islip on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is surrounded by the hamlets of West Islip to the west, Baywood to the northwest, Brentwood to the north, Islip to the east and the village of Brightwaters to the southwest. Its southern shores are lapped over by the waters of the Great South Bay.

Bay Shore is one of Long Island’s older communities, with the historic Sagtikos Manor dating as far back as 1697. Some of the grander and more majestic homes and mansions built from the 1800s through the 1900s have been split up, razed or transformed into commercial real estate, though several of the historic single-family homes and estates remain. Today, many of its homes are high-end townhouses and condos built on old estate grounds, in part due to the need to restore the hamlet back to its former glory.

Residential districts also consist of over 60 multifamily housing sites, such as Newbrook Gardens, which offers 260 or so units of co-ops, and the gated community of Windermere Pond. Along the southern shores are a wealth of waterfront homes affording excellent water views of the bay. There are also rentals, homes with pools, potential mother-daughter, luxury residences, new constructions, some undeveloped vacant lots and 55+ communities that include Oakwood Manor.

Restoration efforts in the community are ongoing and includes Main Street on which many of its attractions are located, such as boutiques, restaurants, offices, other establishments and a meditation garden. Other points of interest include the Bay Shore Marina, Gardiner County Park and South Shore Mall. The hamlet shares the 11706 ZIP code with the neighboring areas of Baywood and North and West Bay Shore.

The neighborhood is about 50 miles from Manhattan, New York City, and travelers going to or from Fire Island are served by the Bay Shore Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and six minutes to an hour and 45 minutes via the Northern State Parkway, Southern State Parkway or Long Island Expressway.
