Nestled on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, is the picturesque hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) of Bayport in the southeast Town of Islip along the Islip-Brookhaven Town line in Suffolk County. It is adjacent to Sayville on the west and Holbrook on the north, both of which are also in Islip Town, though the latter is partially located in Brookhaven. Blue Point, also in Brookhaven, lies immediately to the east.

Bayport boasts sandy beaches, marinas, beautiful parks, campgrounds, historic estates and buildings as well as diverse retail shops and mom-and-pop stores, many of which are clustered along Montauk Highway. A popular spot in the area is Camp Edey, featuring an archery range, hiking trails, a pond, two pools and a camp run by the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County.

Residential areas comprise predominantly single-family homes, many of which are waterfront properties that command fabulous water views of the Great South Bay, whose tranquil waters hug the hamlet’s southern coast. There is also the Meadow Croft Estate dating back to the 19th century and was the family summer estate of John Ellis Roosevelt.

Bayport is around 50 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Sayville Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour and 20 minutes to an hour and 50 minutes via the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Southern State Parkway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Bayport Beach is well maintained throughout the season, has a lifeguard on duty during the day and features a pristine bathing beach, fishing dock, a charming gazebo, and a complete playground, making it a favorite destination for boaters and their kids. The beach is in the Great South Bay, on the southern end of Paulanna Avenue, and borders Homan Creek Dock and Ramp.

Bayport Commons is a versatile sports complex with a variety of field sizes for all ages, and often used by the Bayport-Blue Point Little League in the spring and summer. Aside from the baseball/softball fields, it also has a basketball court, batting cage, concession stand, and a lovely Memorial Garden for those who have battled with cancer.

The 316-acre Sans Souci County Park is a nature preserve that is home to a wide assortment of plant and wildlife species. A French term meaning “without worry,” Sans Souci may have that effect on visitors as they stroll or hike through this tranquil park. Trail markers are available with information on all the features of the preserve, which bestrides the communities of Sayville and Bayport.
