The hamlet of Baywood sits on the western border of the Town of Islip separating it from the Town of Babylon. It is composed primarily of suburban residential neighborhoods, a large industrial district and a couple of schools. The neighborhood is roughly 35 miles from New York City and easily accessible via the Long Island Expressway or Southern State Parkway.

Baywood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the western Town of Islip, Suffolk County, near the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It adjoins Brentwood on the north, Bay Shore on the east and West Islip on the south, all of which are also located in Islip Town. Immediately west of the hamlet is Deer Park in the Town of Babylon.

Baywood is demarcated on the north by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) tracks, on the east by Sagtikos Parkway and on the south by Bay Shore Road. The relatively small community had a land area of 2.26 square miles and population count of 7,726 in the 2020 US Census.

The neighborhood’s residential areas consist of largely single-family homes, many of which have above- or in-ground pools, and a few are as large as 4-bedroom homes or larger. There are also a number of rental properties and undeveloped vacant lots. Industrial and commercial districts are centered on the northern section around the LIRR tracks. There are also several establishments along Bay Shore Road, such as restaurants, a supermarket, convenience store and an auto shop.

Baywood shares the 11706 ZIP code with Bay Shore, some segments of West Islip and Brentwood and several communities on the Fire Island barrier island, including Fair Harbor, Kismet, Point O’ Woods and Saltaire.

Baywood is about 35 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Deer Park Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the LIRR. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and a half to two hours and 45 minutes via Sagtikos Parkway and the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Southern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The Anthony Casamento Park in neighboring West Islip is a family-oriented park and has many amenities and offerings, including a swimming pool, which is the smallest of the four pools in the Town of Islip, and is often less crowded. Aside from the main pool, it also has a wading pool, picnic area, playground, softball and baseball fields, as well as basketball, handball, and tennis courts. The park is located on Muncey Road, on the eastern side of the Robert Moses Causeway.

Nearby in Deer Park is one of New York’s state forests, the Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve. It is an 813-acre property of mostly pitch pine-scrub oak barrens, one of the world’s unique and rare habitats, as well as bigtooth aspens and grasslands. The preserve shelters various types of common animal species and some rare invertebrate species. It is also a recreational site that has miles of trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and paved and unpaved roads for hiking, trail running, mountain biking and observing wildlife.
