Belle Terre NY Real Estate & Homes for Sale
Belle Terre, NY Homes for Sale
Belle Terre is a relatively small harborside village in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on the fabled “Gold Coast” North Shore of Long Island, New York. With year-round residents and a great sense of community, the entirely residential suburban village began as a mainly summer resort with picturesque beaches and views of the Long Island Sound.
Local Area Information
Belle Terre is an incorporated village in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven and is among the “Gold Coast” communities on the glorious North Shore of Long Island, New York, which grew in affluence and became the site of sprawling country estates and baronial mansions during the Gilded Era. Belle Terre is surrounded on the east and south by the village of Port Jefferson and affords impressive water views of the Long Island Sound to the north and Port Jefferson Harbor to the west.
Belle Terre was incorporated into a village in 1931, with Mr. Harry Purvis as its first Mayor, whose first ordinances included the prohibition of businesses in the community. By the 1940s, the area was a largely summer colony with roughly fifty homes. When the Second World War ended, the village prospered and new homes were built, beginning slowly in the 1950s and speeding up development within the next couple of decades.
With a land area of 0.89 square miles in the 2020 US Census, Belle Terre was the third smallest among the villages in the Town of Brookhaven, next to Poquott and Shoreham, which were about half its size, and was the seventh smallest among the 32 villages in Suffolk County.
Single-family homes in ranch, mid-century modern, postmodern, or Tudor revival style mainly constitute the quiet tree-lined streets of the bucolic village. The homes include waterfront properties, horse properties, luxury homes with a pool, and rentals. Commercial developments are prohibited but shopping in neighboring Port Jefferson is accessible, as are waterfront restaurants, bars, sports facilities, and transport hubs. The two villages share the 11777 ZIP code.
Belle Terre is around 60 miles northeast of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Port Jefferson Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Jefferson Branch just south of the village. Travel time to or from the city is about an hour and 40 minutes to two hours and 20 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway. The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company provides ferry services across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut.

Belle Terre, NY ListingsBeaches & Parks
The John W. Knapp Beach, also known as Belle Terre Beach, has cabanas, showers, picnic tables, benches, restrooms, and racks for kayaks and canoes, and offers swimming, paddleboarding and a variety of other aquatic activities. Its main highlight is probably the Beach Program, a fun-filled activity for kids much like a children’s summer camp that Belle Terre village has been offering annually for over half a century at the site. The beach is open exclusively to residents of Belle Terre during the summer season.
The McAllister County Park is a 113-acre scenic waterfront destination in the northern tip of the Village of Belle Terre. Its main attraction is the Pirates’ Cove, a popular spot for anchorage for many boaters, as well as for canoeing and kayaking, especially during the summer season. The shoreline around the park’s perimeter offers beachside walking and hiking to visitors, who could also climb up the dunes and take in the sights of the Long Island Sound and the Port Jefferson Harbor.
The Schools
The Village of Belle Terre is in the Port Jefferson Union Free School District. The district’s three public schools are the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, Port Jefferson Middle School and the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.
