Bellerose Terrace NY Homes for Sale

Bellerose Terrace is a community in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on Long Island, New York. It is part of a three-section area that includes Bellerose Village and the Queens neighborhood of Bellerose, yet it retains a distinct identity and characteristic that distinguishes it from the other communities.

Local Area Information

Bellerose Terrace is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in the northwesternmost corner of the Town of Hempstead, a third of Nassau County’s townships, on Long Island, New York. It adjoins Bellerose Village to the east, Floral Park Village to the southeast, and Elmont to the southwest, which are all located within the Hempstead township as well. The neighborhood of Bellerose and Queens Village, both in the borough of Queens, border the area on the north and west, respectively.

Bellerose Terrace was established in 1926, a couple of years after the adjacent community was incorporated as Bellerose Village, and almost at the same time that most constructions took place in Bellerose, Queens. It is unclear where the Bellerose name comes from, though several theories prevail, including the legend that the owner of nearby Rose farm had a daughter named Belle. Others suggested that it was a flower variety advertised by a local grower, or that it was chosen simply because it sounded “euphonious.”

The hamlet was built on a lower slope than its eastern counterpart, and the hedges that separated the areas created a terrace-like effect, hence the name Bellerose Terrace. In 1982, both communities had their postal addresses changed to the 11001 ZIP code, severing their sole tie to Bellerose in Queens and having the post office in Floral Park Village handle their mail.

Bellerose Terrace is mainly a middle-class neighborhood, in which the majority of the houses are detached two-story single-family homes, a number of which have a large 1920s-type enclosed front porch. Despite its location along the city’s edge and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), the area retains a small-town quietude and charm.

Bellerose Terrace is around 16 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Elmont Station via the LIRR’s Main Line. Travel time to or from the city by car is about 44 minutes to an hour via the Long Island Expressway, Cross Island Parkway, or Grand Central Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Just south of Bellerose Terrace in Elmont is Belmont Park, the annual site of the prestigious and famous Belmont Stakes Triple Crown championship and other notable thoroughbred horse races. The racetrack, one of the most elaborate in the state and designed after great European racecourses, is also known as “The Championship Track” since nearly every major horse racing champion in history has competed on it.

A short distance beyond Belmont Park to the southeast, also in Elmont, is Hendrickson Avenue Park, a Town of Hempstead recreational facility that offers basketball, handball, paddleboard, shuffleboard, a playground, spray pad, and sitting area.

Just a few blocks north of Bellerose Terrace is Breininger Park, a 3.4-acre neighborhood park in Queens Village. Its amenities include basketball and handball courts, playgrounds, spray showers, and restrooms.

The Schools

The community is served by the Floral Park-Bellerose Union Free School District, which has two public schools, both located in Floral Park Village, and the Sewanhaka Central High School District. The latter has five public schools, two of which are also in Floral Park Village, and there is one each in Elmont, Franklin Square, and North New Hyde Park.
