Bellmore is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Its southern part is sometimes called “South Bellmore,” and immediately north of the hamlet is North Bellmore, with which it shares the 11710 ZIP code. Together, they are collectively known as “The Bellmores.”

Bellmore’s immediate neighbor to the west is Merrick and to the east is Wantagh, said to be the “gateway to Jones Beach” for the direct linkage between the mainland and the barrier island provided by the Wantagh State Parkway. Bellmore itself is only about five miles — or eight minutes — from the world-famous Jones Beach State Park and its tons of recreational offerings.

The south side of Bellmore is on Hempstead Bay’s East Bay and has plenty of waterfront properties with captivating water views and private boat docks. Many other homes located near the water’s edge enjoy the cool bay breezes and easy access to the water. Besides single-family homes, the community also offers condos, like the 25 or so units at Bedford Square.

Bellmore properties range from 1- to 4-bedroom homes, though there is also a wealth of larger dwellings with 5 or more bedrooms, such as some of the multifamily houses and luxury residences. The Bellmore Memorial Library has been serving the area since its humble beginnings in 1948. Residents enjoy the convenience of their own train station on the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch, making the community a “commuter’s paradise” since the 1920s.

Beaches & Parks

East Bay Park is part of the Town of Hempstead park system, offering basketball and tennis courts, a multi-purpose field, playground with play equipment, picnic tables and sitting areas. It is family-friendly and has many trees and landscaped grounds, providing a natural and relaxing environment for park visitors. It is located on Ellen Road with a back entrance on Karen Street.

Meroke Preserve between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road is a 25-acre park consisting of woods, wetlands, creeks and a nature trail. The bushwalk can be accessed via the entrance on the eastern side of the preserve at the corner of Orange Street and Farmers Avenue, a block south of Sunrise Highway. The park provides opportunities for viewing various plant species and some wildlife.

Newbridge Road Park is a waterfront park that features baseball, softball and multi-purpose fields, basketball, handball, horseshoe and tennis courts, game tables, sitting areas, a playground with play equipment, four racquet courts, and the outdoor Newbridge Road Park Pool.

It is also home to the Newbridge Arena, a year-round indoor ice skating rink. Ice skate rentals, birthday parties, a Pro Shop and refreshment bar are available on site during public skating sessions. It offers ice skating instructions, private lessons for beginner, freestyle, hockey, and figure skating, as well as recreational hockey league and hockey programs from beginner through advanced levels for ages 5 through 17.

The Schools

Most of the hamlet is served by the Bellmore Union Free School District, which has three public schools, all located in the neighborhood. Bellmorites in the school district attend these schools from pre-K through 6th grade.

A small northern part of Bellmore is served by the North Bellmore Union Free School District, whose Martin Avenue Elementary School is also located in the area.

For grades 7-8, all Bellmore students go to Grand Avenue Middle School, then to the highly esteemed John F. Kennedy High School for grades 9-12, both of which are in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

The prestigious Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools take place yearly in Bellmore.
