Local Area Information

Bellport is a charming village in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is adjacent to East Patchogue to the west, North Bellport to the north, and Brookhaven to the east. It is surrounded by the waters of Bellport Bay to the south and retains ownership of a recreational facility on Fire Island called Ho-Hum Beach.

Around the 1860s, the area became a popular summer resort offering bayside recreational activities, such as swimming, fishing, hunting, and sailing. After 1871, the community became known as “Bellport” and was incorporated as a village in 1910.

Bellport’s 1.44 square miles encompass largely residential homes in an eclectic array of styles, including Colonial, Victorian, and modern architecture. The single-family homes were predominantly built in the 1940s through the ’60s, with a few dating back to the 1800s and early 1900s, imparting an old world charm to the otherwise contemporary coastal community. New constructions, large lots, luxury homes, and pools are among the assortment of property types and features in the area.

Various boutiques, quaint shops, restaurants, galleries, live theaters, a deli, and an antiques store make up Bellport’s compact yet booming downtown at “the four corners” of South Country and Station Roads. About a couple of blocks east, also on South Country Road, is the site of the Gateway Playhouse, the oldest among three professional theaters on Long Island and distinguished as one of the top ten summer theaters in the United States.

The rest of the neighborhood comprises the Bellport Country Club, pristine beaches, small parks, and the village marina, all of which add to the reasons more people flock to this coveted summer retreat. For decades, its laid-back atmosphere has been attracting a large number of prominent people in the world of arts, business, fashion, literature, and media. While many stayed for a season or two, others made the Bellport, NY 11713 ZIP code area their main or secondary home.
