It is adjacent to East Patchogue to the west, North Bellport to the north, and Brookhaven to the east. It is surrounded by the waters of Bellport Bay to the south and retains ownership of a recreational facility on Fire Island called Ho-Hum Beach.
Around the 1860s, the area became a popular summer resort offering bayside recreational activities, such as swimming, fishing, hunting, and sailing. After 1871, the community became known as “Bellport” and was incorporated as a village in 1910.
Bellport’s 1.44 square miles encompass largely residential homes in an eclectic array of styles, including Colonial, Victorian, and modern architecture. The single-family homes were predominantly built in the 1940s through the ’60s, with a few dating back to the 1800s and early 1900s, imparting an old world charm to the otherwise contemporary coastal community.
