Blue Point NY Homes for Sale

Blue Point is a community in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is historically known for being a very popular summer resort and the source of one of the best tasting and much sought after oysters, which came to be known as Blue Points.

Local Area Information

Blue Point is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Its nearest neighbors include North Patchogue and Patchogue respectively to the north and east, Holbrook to the northwest, and Islip Town’s Bayport to the west. Patchogue Bay lies to the south and offers remarkable water views and a host of recreational activities.

In its early years, the hamlet’s harbor was a vital shipping center whence food, lumber, and other supplies were sent to New York City. The oyster seeds planted in the bay in 1815 turned out to be one of the best tasting oysters in the area and were much sought after and soon came to be known as Blue Points. The neighborhood became a very popular summer resort in 1869 when the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reached the area.

The community consists of mostly single-family homes, a number of which includes a pool or accessory apartments. There are new constructions and townhouses, including the primarily waterfront properties at The Harbour at Blue Point, which is a gated community, as is the Vineyards at Blue Point. The latter is also a 55+ community and uses the 11772 ZIP code, while the rest of the hamlet uses 11715.

Blue Point shares a school district and public library system with neighboring Bayport. The library’s logo features a wheelbarrow filled with books as an homage to its beginnings when donated books were gathered from each home via wheelbarrow. The hamlet is home to the Sayville Yacht Club, a private yacht racing club founded in Sayville before World War I. Their facilities were relocated to its present location on Boylan Lane in Blue Point after World War II.

Blue Point is approximately 55 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and about a 15-minute drive to or from the Long Island MacArthur Airport. It is served by the Patchogue Station and Sayville Station via the LIRR’s Montauk Branch. A car trip to or from the city takes about an hour and a half to two hours and 15 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Southern State Parkway.
