The community was originally founded by a large number of Slavic pilgrims from a village in the former Kingdom of Bohemia in today’s Czech Republic, many of whom exemplified the free-spirited, enlightened lifestyles that are usually associated with bohemianism. In 1885, the community formally adopted the name Bohemia. Following World War II, it flourished along with the rest of Long Island and today has nearly 10,000 residents that represent a diverse range of nationalities and ethnicities.

Bohemia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the central Town of Islip, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by Ronkonkoma on the north, Holbrook on the east, Sayville and Oakdale on the south as well as Central Islip and North Great River on the west.

Bohemia’s limits are marked on the north by the Veterans Memorial Highway, on the east by Lincoln Avenue and on the south by Sunrise Highway. Running along its western boundary is the six-mile-long Connetquot River, one of Long Island’s four longest rivers. The hamlet is home to a portion of the Long Island MacArthur Airport and is a short distance from the Sayville Ferry Service, which allows convenient access to a number of the most splendid and least crowded beaches on Fire Island.

Single-family homes generally constitute Bohemia’s residential districts along with some condos, some of which are in the gated community of The Preserve at Connetquot. The healthy real estate market includes rentals, new constructions, horse properties, luxury homes with pools, typically on large lots, and potential mother-daughter. Several homes offer a master bedroom on first floor, and house sizes range from 1-bedroom to 4-bedroom homes or larger.

Industrial and commercial areas are concentrated in the northern and eastern parts of the community mainly along Veterans Memorial Highway and east of Lakeland Avenue. Bohemia is around 50 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Sayville and Oakdale Stations via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch to the south and the Ronkonkoma Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch to the north. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 26 minutes to an hour and 57 minutes via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Southern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The Bohemia Recreation Center is a well-kept and kid-friendly Town of Islip facility that offers a baseball diamond with bleachers, a picnic area, and playground. Ride-on animals, slides, swings, and tubes are available for youngsters to enjoy at the playground, which is nestled among a thick growth of trees. A wide range of programs and classes are also offered at the center.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a 3,473-acre shelter and natural habitat for a variety of interesting plant, fish, and wildlife species. Its amenities include 50 miles of trails for nature hiking, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing, and horseback riding, as well as fly fishing in the Connetquot River.

Like Connetquot Park, the Bohemia Equestrian County Center also offers horseback riding, helping develop a distinct equestrian culture in the community. Several of the residences in the area have stables, and it is usual to see residents leading their horses through the hamlet’s tree-lined roads.
