Brookhaven NY Homes for Sale

Brookhaven is a charming community in the eponymous Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Much of it was designated in 1985 as the Fire Place Historic District, the largest of its kind in Brookhaven Town, for its distinct character described by art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto as “the sort of world Walt Whitman knew.” The district has no major housing nor commercial developments and intends to keep it that way to maintain its authentic atmosphere of tranquility.

Local Area Information

Brookhaven is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) often confused with the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, in which it is located, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is surrounded by the village of Bellport to the southwest, North Bellport to the west and northwest, Yaphank to the northeast, and Shirley to the east. The southern portions afford scenic water views of Bellport Bay.

In 1871, the community known then as “Fire Place” became the namesake of Brookhaven Town because it was, and still is, a haven by a brook. Today, the neighborhood known as South Haven constitutes the area, and the two communities have, for a long time, been closely associated. Brookhaven is home to the H.O.G Farm on Beaver Dam Road, an organic farm of roughly 15 acres that runs a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program for many of its community members.

The Fire Place Historic District is a unique and harmonious amalgam that naturally evolved over time, consisting of single-family homes with varying architecture, age, size, and value, as well as a historic parkway-like road, dock, farms, vast open fields, and a population of diverse cultures and lifestyles.

Just outside the historic district’s southwest limits are waterfront homes in an area called the “E section,” which gets its name from the formation of three creeks in the shape of the letter “E.” Some of its homes are retirement residences and weekend homes of New York City dwellers. Other homes include rentals, luxury homes on spacious lots with a pool, multifamily houses, and a few horse properties. Much of the community uses the Brookhaven, NY 11719 ZIP code, and the rest uses 11713.

Brookhaven lies approximately 60 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Bellport Station and Mastic-Shirley Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and a half to an hour and 55 minutes via the Long Island Expressway, Southern State Parkway, or Northern State Parkway.
