Calverton is a neighborhood straddling the Towns of Riverhead and Brookhaven in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. It has the largest land area yet remains one of the least densely populated communities for its abundant sweeping fields, parklands, preserves, and Long Island’s largest remaining grassland.

Local Area Information

Calverton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. The Town of Riverhead has jurisdiction over most of its areas, while the smaller, mainly undeveloped portion south of the Peconic River is under the administration of the Town of Brookhaven. Its immediate neighbors are Wading River and Baiting Hollow to the north, the hamlet of Riverhead and Riverside to the east, Eastport and Manorville to the south as well as Upton and Ridge to the west.

During its early years, Calverton had a small agricultural community that engaged in mostly growing cranberries, which flourished along the Peconic River. In 1953, the U.S. Navy bought from a local farmer large tracts of land that became the testing and manufacturing site for planes of the former Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. Since then, the community’s history has been closely linked to aviation and aeronautics.

With an area of 28.027 square miles, the community was the largest CDP not only in Suffolk County but also among the 194 CDPs on all of Long Island in the 2020 US Census. Its population of 5,934 was considerably less than Coram’s 40,220 that was within a much smaller land area of 13.82 square miles, making Calverton one of Long Island’s least populous neighborhoods.

Residential districts are made up of primarily single-family homes as well as several condos and townhouses. There are ample 55+ communities, such as Lakewood, Foxwood Village, and Windcrest East. The last two are gated communities, as is Calverton Hills. There are also waterfront homes with splendid water views of a river, lake, or pond, a number of luxury homes, new constructions, and homes with a pool.

The rest of the area comprises mostly large undeveloped lands, zones for agricultural, industrial, and commercial uses as well as Long Island’s largest remaining grassland. The central business district is about three miles east of the Calverton Executive Airpark, a publicly-owned and privately-used airport. Most neighborhoods use the 11933 ZIP code, and the rest uses either 11949 or 11901.

Beaches & Parks

Calverton Ponds Preserve is one of the many components of the 50,000-acre Long Island Central Pine Barrens complex. Calverton Ponds comprises 350 acres of oak-pine forest with three major coastal plain ponds as its main attractions: Fox Pond, Block Pond, and the largest, Sandy Pond. The preserve has trails that lead to a number of observation areas for viewing the ponds up close, and offer opportunities for hiking and observing the various types of rare plant and animal species that inhabit the region.

The Robert Cushman Murphy County Park is a 2,200-acre property that is also part of the Central Pine Barrens and the Peconic River Watershed. It is the first natural park of Suffolk County, and has nature trails and boat rentals to offer visitors. Activities that can be enjoyed include hiking, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, and hunting during season in some areas of the park. This property straddles the communities of Manorville and Calverton, and the park entrance can be found on the north side of Old River Road.

Splish Splash is a family-friendly water park that boasts 96 acres of thrilling rides, water slides, and attractions, earning it the distinction of being the Tri-State area’s largest water park, and one of the largest in New York State. Aside from the fun water slides, its attractions include two wave pools, a lazy river, four kiddie pools, kiddie rides, and more. The park, voted by the Travel Channel one of the Best Water Parks in America, is also a great place to spend birthday parties in the summer.

The Schools

Most of Calverton is served by the Riverhead Central School District, which has seven public schools. One of the district schools, Riley Avenue Elementary School, is located in the hamlet. Riverhead Charter School, which is a public school in a private school environment for students from kindergarten through 10th grade, is another school in the area.

Several homes in the Town of Brookhaven side, along Starr Boulevard and south of Oak Street, are served by the Eastport-South Manor Central School District.
