Cedarhurst Village is in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on Long Island, New York. It is a vital component and located in the heart of a larger area called the Five Towns, and serves as an important commercial and cultural center to the surrounding communities.

Local Area Information

Cedarhurst is an incorporated village in the southwest area of the Town of Hempstead, one of the three townships in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. It constitutes an unofficial group of areas named the Five Towns, along with Lawrence Village, Woodmere, Inwood, and the Hewletts, which itself is made up of five communities: Hewlett and the villages of Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck, and Woodsburgh.

The area was settled prior to the American Revolution, though the earliest significant population growth came with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in 1869. The need for street improvements led the locals to band together and apply for incorporation, and Cedarhurst became an incorporated village in 1910. The village name comes from the “hurst” or grove of cedar trees close by the post office.

Residential areas in the Cedarhurst, NY 11516 ZIP code comprise mostly single-family homes and several multifamily complexes. There are a handful of waterfront homes off Peninsula Boulevard, and other properties that benefit from the soothing water views of Motts Creek. The healthy housing stock also includes an extensive range of other property types, such as rentals, luxury homes, new constructions, co-ops, and accessory apartments, to meet the different demands.

Regarded as the Long Island South Shore’s fashion center for over a century, Cedarhurst has a lively commercial area centered on the east side of the LIRR tracks, predominantly along Central Avenue and spilling out onto the immediate side streets. The six-block area boasts over 200 shops, restaurants, and a diversity of other businesses, making the village a significant commercial and cultural center of the Five Towns.

The area is about 18 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Cedarhurst Station via the Far Rockaway Branch of the LIRR. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about 53 minutes to an hour via Rockaway Boulevard and the Nassau Expressway.
