Center Moriches, NY Homes for Sale

The South Shore of Long Island had become a popular resort destination for the middle-class and wealthy New York City families by the second half of the 19th century. The Center Moriches waterfront became home to many sprawling estates, the largest being the Masury Estate, which is now occupied by a residential development called Holiday Beach.

Local Area Information

Center Moriches is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It constitutes a larger area known as the Greater Moriches and is bordered by Moriches on the west, Manorville on the north, East Moriches on the east, and the waters of Moriches Bay on the south.

Compared to Moriches and East Moriches, Center Moriches has more shops and dining options along Montauk Highway, which serves as its Main Street, yet retains a small-town, suburban feel. The modestly-sized homes draw many young families to the area and are generally located in the hamlet’s northern part, which also consists of some new constructions, industrial and agricultural areas as well as community services. Many of the dwellers are full-time residents, whose favorite recreations include biking, kayaking, and sailing.

The southern area of Center Moriches is composed of four “necks,” or peninsulas, which offer excellent water views of Moriches Bay and is the site of beaches, private docks, marinas, former estates, and mansions. The westernmost peninsula is home to the over 500 residences of Holiday Beach, which has a homeowners association. Their clubhouse is located in the historic Masury Estate Ballroom, a national landmark that offers tours on some weekends, as does the Terry-Ketcham Inn, also a national historic site.

The hamlet contains largely single-family homes and some multifamily complexes and condos, including the Vineyards at Moriches, which is a 55+ community. There are accessory apartments and luxury homes with a pool on expansive lots, and the southern region is packed with waterfront properties. Much of the area uses the 11934 ZIP code, and the rest uses 11955.

Center Moriches is about 70 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Mastic-Shirley Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. Traveling by car to or from the city takes about an hour and 32 minutes to an hour and 55 minutes via the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway, or Southern State Parkway.

Kaler’s Pond Park is a 13-acre Town of Brookhaven facility with amenities that include a playground, shaded picnic tables, restrooms and handicap-accessible ramps. The park is the site of Kaler’s Pond, or Mill Pond, which offers fishing, serene water views, and a sandy, beach-like area. The park also houses a TWA Flight 800 Memorial Garden, the Gilbert S. Raynor Interpretive Nature Trail, and the seasonal Kaler’s Pond Audubon Center, which provides families and children with nature programs.

The Terrell River County Park is a 263-acre wooded property formerly known as the Havens Estate, and is owned by Suffolk County. It is a passive park and preserve that boasts a wide array of plant and tree species, various types of birds that make for a great bird-watching experience, and exquisite views of water and nature all throughout. The only amenities are a few picnic tables and benches, but there is a 2.6-mile moderately used hiking trail for any skill level, and the park allows leashed dogs.

Webby’s Park is a Town of Brookhaven waterfront facility overlooking Moriches Bay. The beach is possibly its main attraction, and the only public beach in Center Moriches. The park has a children’s playground, a shaded picnic area with tables and benches, and available parking for its visitors. Webby’s Park is located at the intersection of Laura Lee Drive and Belleview Avenue.
