Centereach, NY Homes for Sale

Centereach is a community in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is aptly named for its geographic central location, which literally makes it “The Heart of Long Island.”

Local Area Information

Centereach is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by Stony Brook, Setauket, and East Setauket on the north, Terryville and Selden on the east, Farmingville and Holtsville on the south as well as Lake Ronkonkoma and the village of Lake Grove on the west. Much of the hamlet uses the 11720 ZIP code, and some smaller sections use either 11779 or 11784.

From its humble beginnings as a sleepy rural community with only a handful of homesteads, it experienced rapid growth with the construction of several housing developments. Initially a working-class neighborhood, it attracted many families with a higher median income with the new constructions in the 1950s and ’60s, and the sparse population of 628 in the ’40s swelled to nearly 10,000 in the ’70s. It tripled in the 2020 Census and is expected to keep a steady rise as Centereach continues to grow and develop as a community.

Today, Centereach has evolved into a vibrant suburbia with a flourishing commercial district. It contains predominantly single-family homes in a great assortment of styles, including capes, Colonials, ranches, high-ranches, expanded ranches, split-levels, and Victorians. Added to the mix are some postmoderns in some sections, such as along Hammond Road and Howell Avenue. It also encompasses several multifamily housing sites, vacant lots, rentals, potential mother-daughter, and homes with a pool.

Centereach is bisected by Middle Country Road (NY 25), a major thoroughfare and a bustling commercial area. What used to be a dirt road that had no lights is now a busy artery lined with a wide range of shops, strip malls, services, and dining options. Other big-box chain stores and establishments are in the northwest corner at the crossroads of Nicolls Road and Nesconset-Port Jefferson Highway (NY 347).

Centereach is about 50 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, which can be reached by car in about 90 minutes to two hours via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The main highlight of the Centereach Complex is probably the swimming pool, though there are many other athletic provisions and amenities at this 15.5-acre facility. They include courts for basketball, handball/racquetball, pickleball, tennis and volleyball, as well as a playground and picnic area. There is also a spray park, bathhouse, water slide, and a walking trail around the complex. It also serves as a venue for a variety of programs hosted by the Town of Brookhaven, such as basketball tournaments, pool parties, summer camps and swimming lessons.

The Percy B. Raynor Memorial Park offers three lighted baseball/softball fields, two lighted soccer/football fields, and a children’s playground. There is also a multipurpose field, gazebo, restrooms and benches. The athletic fields occupy only about 20 acres of the 55-acre property, and the rest is an undeveloped, densely-wooded land. It is located on Belle Meade Road, on the south side of Nesconset-Port Jefferson Highway (NY State Route 347).

Tiki Action Park is an award-winning, tropical-themed amusement facility, whose exciting miniature golf was voted the Best of Long Island multiple times, as was their 45-game arcade and children’s parties. Other attractions include go-karts, a laser maze, and Virtual Reality game, among many others. There is also a refreshment bar, gift shop, shaded picnic area and party lounge. The last two can accommodate a large number of people, and hold birthday parties, group outings, company functions, and other special celebrations.

The Schools

Most students in Centereach attend the Middle Country Central School District, which has 14 public schools: two for pre-K and kindergarten, eight for elementary, and two each for middle and high schools.
