It adjoins the hamlet of Huntington to the west and southwest, as well as Greenlawn, East Northport and a small region of the village of Northport to the southeast. It is surrounded on three sides by Centerport Harbor, Northport Bay, and Northport Harbor, providing miles of shoreline that allow for plenty of waterfront homes with splendid water views.

Centerport is one of the coastal communities on the North Shore, also called the Gold Coast of Long Island, an area known for its affluence and lavish homes built by several wealthy families at the turn of the 20th century. One of these homes belonged to William K. Vanderbilt II, whose Gold Coast mansion known as Eagle’s Nest became one of the hamlet’s main attractions, the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium.

The Centerport, NY 11721 ZIP code is a mainly residential area of single-family homes, with quiet tree-lined streets, a serene atmosphere, and many winding roads and hills along the beachfront. There are luxury homes with a pool, townhouses, and condos, some of which are rentals, and there are also several remaining vacant lots. Stunning beaches and parks, fine restaurants, a fish hatchery, and historic buildings contribute to this area’s many attractions.

The community was named Cow Harbor until after 1895, when it was renamed Centerport due to its location between the eastern and western ends of Huntington Town. Today, the hamlet has a number of marinas that support a culture for sailing and boating, and is home to the Centerport Yacht Club, which was established in 1947 and holds various annual regattas, usually from spring to autumn.
