When the area was reached by the Long Island Rail Road in 1842, Suffolk Station developed into a commercial center, hence the name Central Islip was formed and adopted by the new station and the community. In 1889, the opening of the Central Islip Psychiatric Center, once the second largest psychiatric hospital in the U.S., brought many employment opportunities and an influx of hospital workers. The hamlet saw a rebirth in the mid-1990s with new residential constructions, business centers and government buildings.

Central Islip is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York. It sits right in the heart of the Town of Islip and is adjacent to Hauppauge and the village of Islandia on the north, Ronkonkoma and Bohemia on the east, Islip Terrace and North Great River on the south as well as Islip and Brentwood on the west. The Town’s name was inspired by England’s Islip Village, the hometown of William Nicoll who was granted large tracts of land in the area.

Residential districts in Central Islip are composed of mostly single-family homes and plenty of townhouses and condos that include those at Windbrooke Homes and the 487-unit complex named Park Row. There is also Courthouse Commons, part of which is a 55+ community that features 2-bedroom condos and homes with a garage. The hamlet also has 4-bedroom homes or larger, homes with first-floor bedrooms, homes with pools, rentals, undeveloped vacant lots, gated communities, potential mother-daughter and horse properties.

Central Islip residents enjoy an array of shopping and dining options. Many restaurants and shops, including the Town Center shopping mall, are clustered along West Suffolk Avenue and Carlton Avenue. Industrial districts located predominantly along the Long Island Rail Road tracks provide a variety of businesses and services as well as employment opportunities. The Cohalan County Court Complex, one of the largest in the US, and the Fairfield Properties Ballpark, home of the Long Island Ducks, are located in the hamlet.

The neighborhood is around 45 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and is only a 15-minute drive to the Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, a convenient alternative to JFK International and LaGuardia airports in Queens. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 18 minutes to an hour and 45 minutes via the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway or Southern State Parkway. Beaches & Parks

The Central Islip Recreation Center is a large pleasant facility that contains a baseball field, two basketball courts, three tennis courts, four handball courts and a playground. It is a nice indoor and outdoor facility for residents to enjoy, and it houses a range of programs sponsored by the Town of Islip.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a 3,473-acre shelter and natural habitat for a variety of interesting plant, fish and wildlife species. Its amenities include fly fishing in the Connetquot River and 50 miles of trails for nature hiking, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing and horseback riding.

Fairfield Properties Ballpark, home of the Long Island Ducks, not only hosts baseball games but also allows birthday parties, fundraisers, group picnics and scoreboard messaging and offers luxury suites, concessions, a first aid station and souvenir shop.
