Centre Island is an incorporated village in one of Nassau County’s three townships, the Town of Oyster Bay, on Long Island, New York. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is actually a peninsula and is attached to the eastern tip of Bayville Village. The waters of Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Harbor and West Harbor overlap nearly all sides of Centre Island and offer amazing water views all around.

Centre Island’s major development as a community began near the end of the 19th century. As the Long Island Rail Road was built, more people were attracted to the area, and the succeeding discovery of the internal combustion engine facilitated commerce and interaction among the towns. The most significant change, though, was led by the establishment of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club clubhouse in 1892, when some of its members discovered the Island and eventually bought land for their summer homes.

Centre Island’s growth was paused during World War I and resumed when the war ended, including the development of the bathing facility known today as Centre Island Beach. Soon, the area saw rapid change, and the growing economy also propelled real estate expansion beginning with the Joyce Place subdivision. To keep the community’s growth in check, the residents banded together and incorporated the village in 1926.

Centre Island consists almost entirely of residential areas with over 200 households and mostly single-family homes, many of which are waterfront houses delivering beautiful water views or luxury properties set along private roads. The dwellings vary from the more modest to 4-bedroom homes to the more impressive residences with 9 bedrooms or more. A number of homes have one or two bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features and amenities. The village also has several undeveloped vacant lots and rental properties.

In the 2020 US Census, Centre Island’s population count of 407 made it Nassau County’s second least populous village, next to Cove Neck, and the sixth least populous among the 96 villages on Long Island. The community uses the 11771 ZIP code.

Beaches & Parks

Centre Island Beach boasts 650 feet of white sand beaches along the Long Island Sound and Oyster Bay Harbor. It offers Sound and bay side swimming, kayak launching and night surf fishing, and is home to a football field and two basketball courts. A concession stand and lots of parking spaces are also available at this Town of Babylon facility, which serves as a venue for a few community events, such as the annual Turkey Trot 5K and beach concerts.

The Congressman Lester Wolff Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a 3,209-acre protected coastal area with exceptional marine habitats that support a diverse range of aquatic wildlife and migratory waterfowl species. The refuge is accessible by boat and provides opportunities for saltwater fishing with license, observing wildlife, nature photography and environmental education. It consists of various habitats and has the greatest concentration of wintering waterfowl among all the national wildlife refuges on Long Island.
