Cherry Grove is an unincorporated neighborhood on Fire Island, one of the four barrier islands on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. Immediately west of Cherry Grove is Sailors Haven, which is occupied by the Sunken Forest and the Sailors Haven Marina, and to the east is Fire Island Pines, which, like Cherry Grove, is also an LGBTQ+ community summer mecca.

Often referred to simply as “The Grove,” the community is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the south and the Great South Bay on the north, across which lies West Sayville on “the mainland” of Long Island. Immediately east of it is Sayville, which shares the 11782 ZIP code with Cherry Grove.

The small community spans only 14 blocks, with Bayview and Lewis Walks running down its entire length, parallel to the beaches. West and Ivy Walks are respectively on the westernmost and easternmost ends and run down Cherry Grove’s width, which can be crossed by foot in about only three minutes. The community encompasses around 300 single-family homes, many of which are waterfront properties with stunning water views of the bay or ocean. There are also luxury homes, which typically come with a pool, and a few remaining vacant lots.

Walking is the main mode of transport for exploring the compact Cherry Grove vicinity and going to nearby areas. Bicycles and water taxis are also a couple of options in this car-free community, which is around 60 miles southeast of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Visitors travel by car via the Robert Moses Causeway then the cars are parked in designated parking areas for the duration of the stay.

Getting to Cherry Grove is also possible by private boats or the Sayville Ferry, which serves the area and the neighboring Fire Island Pines, Sailors Haven, and Water Island. Commuters take the Long Island Rail Road train to Sayville Station then take a taxi or shuttle ride to Sayville Ferry. The shuttle services will be waiting when the train arrives. The boat ride of about 20 minutes also takes Cherry Grove passengers back to the mainland.

Cherry Grove’s pristine beaches and historic landmarks are among the protected components of the 30-square-mile Fire Island National Seashore. Aside from beach swimming, it offers an assortment of summer recreational activities, such as surfing, kayaking, hiking, nature photography, ranger-guided programs and other special events. Beachcombing, birdwatching, botanizing, and sometimes even cross-country skiing may also be enjoyed in the winter. The FINS consists of almost the entire island, from Fire Island Lighthouse to Smith Point County Park, and all the small communities in between, including Cherry Grove.
