Cold Spring Harbor NY Homes for Sale

Cold Spring Harbor is located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, in Suffolk County’s Town of Huntington. From a prominent whaling town then a fashionable summer resort, the area today has evolved into a suburban community with lovely single-family homes, various educational and cultural groups, as well as a central business and historic district.

Local Area Information

Cold Spring Harbor is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, under the authority of the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County. It is bordered by the hamlet of Huntington on the east, Huntington Station on the southeast, Lloyd Harbor Village on the north, Laurel Hollow Village on the west, Woodbury on the southwest, and West Hills on the south.

In the 17th century, English colonists called this area Cold Spring for the naturally cold freshwater springs flowing north through the region and into the harbor. In the 20th century, although the facility is in the adjacent village of Laurel Hollow, Nassau County, this area became known as the site of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Cold Spring Harbor today is mainly a commuter town of New York City, and home to just a little over 3,000 people. The western limit is lined with waterfront homes with captivating water views of Cold Spring and Inner Harbors. The rest are lovely single-family homes, luxury properties with a pool on large lots, a number of new constructions, and rentals.

The heart of this hamlet is a tiny central business district running along Route 25A, known as the Main Street Historic District. While offering modern shopping and services, the district maintains an old-time feel and look with its quaint boutiques, restaurants, and a whaling museum in an 1894 ship captain’s house.

The Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724 and 11743 ZIP codes are also home to various educational and cultural groups: the Nature Conservancy’s LI chapter, the CSH Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, the Dolan DNA Learning Center, and the CSH Whaling Museum and Education Center, among others.

Cold Spring Harbor is roughly 35 miles northeast of Manhattan in New York City, and served by the Cold Spring Harbor Station and Huntington Station via the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 53 minutes to two hours and four minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Cold Spring Harbor State Park occupies 40 acres of hilly terrain along the inlet’s south side, offering miles of summer hiking trails, and winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Fine views of the water are visible throughout the year.

The Uplands Farm Sanctuary offers 2.5 miles of marked, double-trailed loop that is perfect for family hikes. A trail map of the sanctuary, its link with the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, and information regarding the habitat in the area can be found at a kiosk at the trailhead. This grassy, Cold Spring Harbor trail leads hikers through bird and butterfly meadows, deciduous forests and into a white pine-shaded ravine.

Wawapek Preserve is a 32-acre environmentally vital property, of which more than 60 percent consists of mature hardwood forest that helps protect the quality of air and controls erosion throughout the area’s steep ravines. The woodland trails offer visitors a chance to view and explore the forests and catch sight of the various wildlife that inhabit the area, such as foxes and box turtles.

The Schools

Most of the students in the hamlet attend the schools of the Cold Spring Harbor Central School District, which has four public schools. Two of the district schools, Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High and Goosehill Primary Schools, are located in the area. Lloyd Harbor Elementary is in Lloyd Harbor Village, and West Side Elementary School is in Laurel Hollow Village.

The rest of the students in Cold Spring Harbor go to the schools of the Huntington Union Free School District.
