Copiague is a community in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Like many coastal communities, it fosters a boating and sailing lifestyle and features many waterfront homes, yet it stands out from its neighboring villages for its charming historic district with the last vestiges of a Venetian-style neighborhood.

Copiague is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is bounded by the villages of Amityville and Lindenhurst respectively on the west and east as well as North Amityville on the north. The Great South Bay borders it on the south on which are the waterfront properties.

One of Copiague’s early housing developments was the American Venice, in which the Canal Grande was dug and a few dozen Venetian-style homes were built. By the late 1920s, three more canals had been dug south of Montauk Highway, dividing the third peninsula into the five sections that constitute it today. Some of the plans were abandoned and American Venice eventually became a conventional suburban neighborhood.

Amity Harbor is the southwestern peninsula, served by the Amityville Post Office and uses the 11701 ZIP code. The central peninsula is known as Copiague Harbor, also referred to as Great Neck Landing, and is an affluent private community, which mainly encompasses larger properties with memberships to a homeowners’ association. It is served by the Copiague Post Office and uses the 11726 ZIP code.

The southeastern peninsula was designated by the Babylon Town Board as the American Venice Historic District. The few 1920s structures that remain include the Venetian-style bridges along East and West Riviera Drives and two winged lion statues atop Greek-style columns. The peninsula is served by the Lindenhurst Post Office and uses the 11757 ZIP code.

Copiague consists of mainly single-family homes, a number of which are rentals or new constructions or have accessory apartments or pools. There are also condos, some of which are in gated communities, including Cambridge Square, which is also a 55+ community.

The Copiague Station of the LIRR serves the neighborhood, which is roughly 35 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City. Traveling by car to or from the city takes about an hour and 20 minutes to two hours and 15 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Southern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Gateway Park welcomes visitors to Copiague with its beautifully landscaped grounds and soothing greenery, and has always been aptly referred to as the “gateway to downtown Copiague.” The park was renovated in the mid-2000s, but was officially named “Gateway Park” only in 2019. It has a tree-shaded seating area, benches, brick footpaths, and a “Little Free Library,” at which residents can take and leave a book. The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in Copiague is sometimes held at Gateway Park.

Tanner Park is a large, diverse park for people of all ages, located on the Great South Bay at the southern end of Baylawn Avenue. It has plenty of facilities and amusements, including the Tanner Park Marina, the Interactive Spray Park, and the Tanner Park Dog Run. The park also has many athletic facilities, such as basketball and tennis courts, as well as baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer and softball fields. Other park facilities include the bandshell, fishing pier, picnic area, playground, senior citizens center, and skateboard park.
