Dix Hills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Huntington on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by Melville, South Huntington, Elwood, and Commack, which is partly in the Town of Smithtown. The Town of Islip’s Brentwood and the Town of Babylon’s Deer Park and Wheatley Heights also border the hamlet.

Dix Hills sits in the middle of a ring of golf courses and parks, the largest of which is Dix Hills Park, a 152-acre wooded park that offers nature trails, playgrounds, swimming, two ice rinks, a 9-hole golf course, and summer camps. The Dix Hills Ice Rink has two modern, full-sized, year-round skating facilities with complete amenities, and offers public sessions, lessons, and adult and youth hockey programs. In 2001, the Fitness Trail was added to this park, which has 20 fitness stations with exercise equipment.

The Dix Hills Pool is a facility that features an outdoor pool with three diving boards, and comes fully equipped with locker rooms, a sizable sun deck area, a kiddie pool, playground, and food concession. It is open from the end of June until Labor Day Weekend and also offers youth and adult swim lessons.

The Dix Hills Park Golf Course is a nine-hole golf course where carts are permitted, though walking is highly encouraged, and also offers lessons. There is also an irons-only driving range and putting green for practice. The Dix Hills Adventure Camp offers campers a full day of activities such as arts and crafts, group games, ice skating, sports, and swimming.

Otsego Park is one of the major facilities that serve residents in the southeastern section of the Town of Huntington with park entrances on Commack Road and Otsego Avenue. It has fourteen playing fields and a lot of amenities such as seven little league fields (two have lights), four Pee Wee fields, two lighted softball fields, lighted tennis courts, a lighted baseball field, basketball court, children’s playground, and restrooms.

The Schools

Dix Hills is mostly served by the Half Hollow Hills Central School District and students from some sections of northeastern Dix Hills are served by the Commack School District.

The Half Hollow Hills Central School District has five elementary schools, namely, Otsego, Paumanok, Signal Hill, Sunquam, and Vanderbilt; two middle schools, which are Candlewood Middle School and West Hollow Middle School, and two high schools, which are Half Hollow Hills High School East and Half Hollow Hills High School West.

Half Hollow Hills High School East and Half Hollow Hills High School West two had average SAT scores in reading of 549 and 542, respectively, compared with 489 for the state of New York in 2015. In math, each high school had average scores of 577 and 559 versus a state average of 502, and in writing, the scores were 555 versus 478 for the state.

The schools in the Commack School District include Commack Middle School and Rolling Hills Elementary, which are both located within Dix Hills, as well as Commack High School, which had average 2015 SAT scores of 542 in critical reading, 576 in math, and 546 in writing.

The Five Towns College, which is an independent and the only private residential college in Suffolk County, is also located within Dix Hills.
