Local Area Information

East Farmingdale is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the northwest corner of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York, along the Nassau-Suffolk County line. Its closest neighbors include Wyandanch and West Babylon to the east, North Lindenhurst and North Amityville to the south, and Melville to the north. Three communities in Nassau County’s Town of Oyster Bay lie to the west: Old Bethpage, the village of Farmingdale, and South Farmingdale.

During its early years, East Farmingdale comprised mostly grasslands with farms extending throughout the region. In the late 1920s, the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Manufacturing Company’s flying field was developed and eventually became Republic Airport. By the mid-1900s, the once crop-producing fields had been adapted for use in the manufacturing industry.

East Farmingdale is usually associated with Farmingdale as the former uses the latter’s mailing address and 11735 ZIP code and is also served by the Farmingdale Post Office. East Farmingdale is home to many Long Island companies, and about a third of its land area is composed of the Republic Airport, a regional aviation reliever, and Saint Charles Cemetery. Also in the area is the American Airpower Museum, where some of Republic Airport’s historic aircrafts, artifacts, and facilities are being maintained and displayed.

Only a small area of East Farmingdale consists of residential districts with single-family homes, a number of which include pools. Most of the neighborhoods are protected by the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company. The central airport area is served by the Republic Airport Fire Rescue, and a small mid-southern portion is served by the North Amityville Fire Department.

East Farmingdale is approximately 35 miles east of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Farmingdale Station and Pinelawn Station via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and three minutes to an hour and 20 minutes via the Northern State Parkway, Long Island Expressway or Southern State Parkway.

Approximately a third of the region, the section north of the LIRR Babylon railroad tracks, is serviced by Half Hollow Hills Central School District, which has nine public schools. District elementary students east of Broadhollow Road attend Paumanok Elementary School, while those west of the road attend Sunquam Elementary School. They all then go to West Hollow Middle School, and Half Hollow Hills High School East next.
