East Meadow is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the northeast region of the Town of Hempstead, a township in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. It is bounded by Levittown to the east, North Wantagh to the southeast, North Bellmore to the south, North Merrick to the southwest, Uniondale to the west, as well as Salisbury and New Cassel to the north, the latter of which is in the Town of North Hempstead. To the northeast lies the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville.

During its early years, the area sat within a vast tract of prairie known as the Great Hempstead Plains, and east of the Hempstead settlement, thus the name East Meadow. It became a valuable pasturage and hence a camp in the American Revolution for the British military, whose supplies were provided by local farmers. The 1800s saw a significant growth in farming, and the establishment of estates and magnificent country houses in the area, much like in the “Gold Coast” North Shore communities.

The economic growth and suburbanization after World War II rapidly transformed the farming area into a bustling residential community, with nearly all the meadows and farmlands replaced by various homes and businesses. Besides the Salisbury Park Drive Ballfields, which has little league and multi-use fields, East Meadow also has the Senator Speno Memorial Park, a Town of Hempstead park that is popular among the residents who enjoy the different playing courts, multipurpose fields, playground, and Vita Course fitness trail.

There is also the Veterans Memorial Park, another Town of Hempstead park whose attractions include a playground, game tables, outdoor pools with diving boards, and playing courts for basketball, handball, paddleball, and tennis.

Eisenhower Park is a 930-acre Nassau County parkland that was established with a vision to develop a park that “one day will be to Nassau County what Central Park is today to New York City.” The rich diversity of recreational facilities include three exceptional 18-hole golf courses, the 80,000-square-foot Nassau County Aquatic Center, which is deemed one of the country’s finest swimming facilities, the Northwell Health Ice Center, and the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, among many others.

The hamlet is within the boundaries of the East Meadow Union Free School District, which has nine public schools. The district schools are located in the neighborhood, with the exception of W.T. Clarke Middle and High Schools and Bowling Green Elementary School, which are in Salisbury.
