East Norwich is a community in Nassau County’s Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York. East Norwich is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay, one of the three townships in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by the hamlets of Oyster Bay and Syosset on the north and south, respectively, as well as the villages of Oyster Bay Cove on the east, Upper Brookville on the northwest and Muttontown on the southwest.

The area takes its name from the city of Norwich in Norfolk County, England. There is no West, North nor South Norwich on Long Island because the “East” was only appended to the name by the Post Office when it was learned that there was already another place also named Norwich, a city in and the county seat of Chenango County in upstate New York.

With a one-square-mile area, East Norwich is one of the relatively smaller neighborhoods in Nassau County, but even smaller is its population. In the 2020 US Census, its population count of 2,792 made it the second least populous among all the CDPs in Oyster Bay Town next to Greenvale, a larger part of which is located in the Town of North Hempstead.

Single-family homes predominantly constitute the residential districts in East Norwich and include 3-bedroom homes or larger, plenty of luxury residences and rental properties. The area also keeps an inventory of fine homes with private pools, first-floor bedrooms and other features and amenities.

The neighborhood has a central business district at and around the intersection of Northern Boulevard and Oyster Bay Road, where most of the shops, dining options and other commercial establishments are located. Much of the community uses the East Norwich, NY 11732 ZIP code, and the rest uses 11771.

East Norwich is approximately 27 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson Branches of the Long Island Rail Road. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and a half via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Named the “Best Nature Walk of Long Island” in 2006 by Long Island Press, Muttontown Preserve is a scenic 550-acre park, the largest nature preserve in Nassau County.
