The thriving suburban community sits on the edge of the Rockaway peninsula on the South Shore of Long Island, an important location that has ties to its rich milling and maritime history, and was the heart of the village life during its early years.

East Rockaway is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. It is a gateway to the Five Towns area, which includes Hewlett and the village of Hewlett Harbor located immediately to East Rockaway’s west and southwest, respectively. The villages of Lynbrook and Rockville Centre, as well as the unincorporated community of Oceanside, are also among the area’s closest neighbors.

The hamlet of Bay Park immediately south was once part of the community until 1912, but is still regarded as part of the general East Rockaway area, which was settled by a Native American tribe that referred to the land as Rockawanahaha, or “sandy place.” The segment of the Rockaway peninsula was the closest to Hempstead, thus the original name, Near Rockaway. Its earliest industries involved a river gristmill, which is now a historic museum, a lumber yard, and bakery, the first public oven in the State of New York.

East Rockaway became one of the busiest seaports on the South Shore in the 1800s. It all ended when the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) arrived and moved commerce inland in 1869, the same year the post office was established and gave the area its current name. Trains were then called Huckleberries because they stopped so often that passengers could get off and pick huckleberries.

Incorporated 1900, East Rockaway largely uses the 11518 ZIP code, while some small areas in the west, north, and east use the 11557, 11563, and 11572 ZIP codes, respectively. The historic coast that was the center of community life is now lined with many waterfront properties with impressive water views. The real estate stock is diverse, and includes single-family homes, co-ops, condos, new constructions, rentals, multifamily housing, luxury homes with a pool, vacant lots, townhouses, and possible mother-daughter.

The village is about 20 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the East Rockaway and Centre Avenue Stations via the LIRR’s Long Beach Branch. Travel time to or from the city by car is about 52 minutes to an hour via Sunrise Highway or Southern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Bay Park is a Nassau County waterfront recreational facility located in the neighboring hamlet of the same name. It is home to a scenic 96-acre, nine-hole golf course, athletic fields and courts, biking and running paths, a dog run, picnic area, and a playground with a spray pool. There is also a fishing dock and a boat launch/landing location that is part of the South Shore Blueway Trail.

Hewlett Point Park is a Town of Hempstead park also located on the waterfront. It is notable for the magnificent water views of Hewlett Bay, and features a beach, outdoor pool, picnic area, tennis and volleyball courts, and a playground.

There are five East Rockaway Village parks: Memorial, Kevin E. McNulty, Minore, Oxbow, and White Cannon Point, which is another waterfront park and is a popular fishing spot in the early morning. McNulty Park is by the LIRR station and is more commonly used by the train commuters.

The Schools

The eastern part of the village is zoned for the East Rockaway Union Free School District, which has three public schools, all of which are located in the area.

The region west of the line roughly running down Carman, Grant, and Rocklyn Avenues is served by the Lynbrook Union Free School District, which has seven public schools. Two of the district schools — Marion Street Elementary and Waverly Park Elementary Schools — are also in the village.
