East Setauket was once merged with Setauket forming the CDP known then as Setauket-East Setauket. They are now separate but the two hamlets will always share a rich and glorious history. When the Long Island Rail Road was completed in 1873, the Setaukets started becoming a summer resort town attracting many wealthy families into the area.

East Setauket is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Brookhaven on Long Island’s North Shore. East Setauket and Setauket’s neighboring hamlet to the west are known as ‘the Setaukets’ and make up the area between Stony Brook and Port Jefferson Harbors. East Setauket lies south of the village of Poquott, north of Centereach and west of Port Jefferson Village, Port Jefferson Station and Terryville.

The Setaukets are part of Brookhaven’s famous Three Village district, along with the Stony Brook area. This modest-sized coastal community sits on the idyllic Gold Coast area of Long Island. The Setaukets are mostly suburban, with shops and restaurants clustered along Route 25A. The residential areas are made up of mostly single-family homes, some of which are rentals or 55+ communities, or built on lots large enough for pools or accessory apartments.

Old Field’s nearby village is home to great waterfront properties overlooking Long Island Sound, many of which were developed in the mid-1900s. The Setaukets, too, are filled with history: besides historic homes, it has a New England-style village green featuring a mill pond, post office, a church built in 1729, and another in 1660 as well as the Emma S. Clark Library, one of the finest on Long Island.

The historic Frank Melville Memorial Park provides walking trails in a 20-acre forest and a five-acre arboretum, and residents also enjoy a public beach in neighboring Stony Brook. Setauket’s members-only St. George’s Golf and Country Club offers an 18-hole course. Much of East Setauket uses the 11733 ZIP code, while other areas use either 11777 or 11776.

This community is popular with families seeking convenient transportation to the big city and nearby amenities, while enjoying the quiet life of the hamlet. Both property values and the residents’ median income remain high, making the Setaukets one of the country’s most costly and desirable real estate markets. Stony Brook State University of New York and the neighboring Stony Brook University Hospital are top employers in this region.

Beaches & Parks

The East Setauket Pond Park on Main Street is a very small park with picturesque views. It features a beautiful pond teeming with various wildlife, such as waterfowl and turtles, a charming gazebo for sitting and relaxing, and a trail around the pond for strolling, jogging and dog-walking. There are also benches along the way and a path that leads to an area that offers great views of the Little Bay.

The Laurel Ridge Setauket Woods Nature Preserve is a Town of Brookhaven park that offers miles of trails for long-distance hiking, dog-walking and biking, with different levels of difficulty. Situated on a glacial moraine, the beautiful woodland features a forest canopied by various oak species and pitch pines, and a vast undergrowth of mountain laurel. The preserve provides habitats for a wide variety of birds, amphibians, small mammals, invertebrates and reptiles.
