Local Area Information

Eatons Neck is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, and part of the municipal authority of the Town of Huntington. Its sole adjacent neighbor is the village of Asharoken, which is located on an isthmus connecting them to Northport Village on the “mainland” of Long Island. It is surrounded on two sides by Northport Bay and Huntington Bay, which leads to the open waters of the Long Island Sound.

The community is named after a well known and wealthy English trader named Theophilus Eaton, who gained ownership of the land in 1646. In the 2020 U.S. Census, the area measured a little over a square mile, making it the second smallest CDP in the Town of Huntington, next to Halesite. It was the third smallest among the 127 CDPs in Suffolk County, while the smallest was the Town of Southold’s New Suffolk, which was about half the size of its land area.

The hamlet is composed of mostly single-family homes, many of which are waterfront properties that have glorious water views and commonly come with beach access and private boat docking. There are also luxury homes, some of which have a pool or are built on lots large enough for horse properties. The homes have addresses that use the Eatons Neck, NY 11768 ZIP code.

A U.S. Coast Guard Station can be found on the northern tip of the community, past Asharoken Village. Founded in 1849, the Coast Guard Station Eatons Neck is the oldest in the State of New York, and the sixth oldest in the US. The Station keeps watch over New York City’s rear maritime entrance and provides assistance to local boaters. On its grounds is the Eatons Neck Lighthouse, which is the second oldest lighthouse on Long Island and the sixth oldest in the US. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Eatons Neck is around 44 miles northeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Long Island Rail Road via the Port Jefferson Branch. Driving to or from the city takes roughly an hour and 39 minutes to two hours and 24 minutes via the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

Hobart Beach features a 1,725-feet beachfront with scenic water views on all sides, providing visitors the feeling of being on a small private island. It is on a sand spit on the southwest of Eatons Neck, and is aptly called “Sand City.” Its amenities include a boat launch, playground, picnic areas, showers, restrooms, and a basketball court at the spacious parking lot, and offers fishing, motorboating, sailing, waterskiing, and beach volleyball.

The southern end of Hobart Beach is home to the Sarah H. Ruppert Water Bird Park-Preserve, home to a variety of near-threatened or endangered bird species, such as piping plovers and least terns. Though it is closed to the public, visitors could still enjoy bird watching from afar while lounging on the beach sand. It has served as a bird sanctuary since 1976, and is named after a local who was an avid environmentalist and known for a time as the “bird lady of Long Island.”

Eatons Neck is served by the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, which has seven public schools. Ocean Avenue Elementary is in the Village of Northport, while Northport Middle and Norwood Avenue Elementary Schools are geographically located in Fort Salonga.
