Elmont is a neighborhood in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on Long Island, New York, just outside the city limits of Queens borough. It is best known as the site of the thoroughbred horse-racing facility Belmont Park, and the UBS Arena, home of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders.

Elmont is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead on Long Island, New York. It lies along the Queens borough-Nassau County line, earning it the moniker “The Gateway to Long Island.” It is tucked between Queens Village and Bellerose Terrace to the northwest, Floral Park and South Floral Park Villages to the northeast, Franklin Square to the east, North Valley Stream to the south, and Cambria Heights to the southwest.

Elmont came to a turning point in its history in 1905 with the opening of Belmont Park, the site of the traditional final and longest leg of thoroughbred racing’s prestigious and famous Triple Crown, as well as other notable horse races. The Belmont Racetrack is one of the most elaborate in the state, designed after great European race courses, and is perhaps the most important achievement in the area’s progress.

Farms were soon subdivided to accommodate homes, many of which were owned by Belmont Racetrack workers, and many businesses were established along Hempstead Turnpike, transforming the area from a rural farm into a suburban residential community. When World War II ended, Elmont held an extensive construction of lovely homes, many of which were built in Cape Cod style variations. Near Belmont Park is a nest of older, smaller shingled homes.

Belmont Park is the annual site of the famous and highly acclaimed Belmont Stakes Triple Crown championship and other significant thoroughbred horse races. The racecourse is also known as “The Championship Track” since nearly every major horse racing champion in history has competed on it.

Hendrickson Avenue Park is a Town of Hempstead recreational facility that offers basketball, handball, paddleboard, shuffleboard, a playground, spray pad, and sitting area.

The Schools

Most of the hamlet’s school-age populace in the primary level attend the schools of the Elmont Union Free School District, which has six public schools. Three of the district schools — Clara H. Carlson, Dutch Broadway, and Gotham Avenue Schools — are located in the neighborhood, while the rest are in North Valley Stream, Franklin Square, and Stewart Manor Village. These schools feed into the Sewanhaka Central High School District, whose Elmont Memorial High School is also in the area.

A small region in the southeast corner is served by the Valley Stream 13 Union Free School District, whose four public schools feed into the Valley Stream Central High School District.
