Elwood is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. It is bounded by Dix Hills on the south, Greenlawn on the west and northwest, East Northport on the northeast, and Commack on the east, which is partially in the Town of Smithtown. Also near the western border of this 4.78-square-mile community are the hamlets of Huntington Station and South Huntington.

What Elwood may be lacking in a downtown, fire district, post office, and distinct community identity, it makes up for in its warm, caring nature, summed up and symbolized by its “Heart of Huntington” community sign at the junction of Elwood and Cuba Hill Roads. While the slogan may be referring to the hamlet’s central location within Huntington Town, it may also be interpreted as a place with a heart.

The area encompasses pleasant woodsy neighborhoods with mostly single-family homes that are colonials, capes, ranches, and a few postmodern new constructions. There are also luxury homes with a pool in gated communities, several rentals, 55+ communities, and potential mother-daughter. Shopping is convenient with the many shops, restaurants, services, and various other establishments clustered along Jericho Turnpike, and a small commercial district called Elwood Center on the southern end of the hamlet.

The community has three zip codes that it shares with its neighboring hamlets: 11731 with East Northport, 11740 with Greenlawn, and 11743 with Huntington. Elwood is patrolled by the Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct, and served by four fire departments: Greenlawn, Commack, East Northport, and Huntington Manor Fire Districts.

Elwood is about 40 miles east of Manhattan, New York City, conveniently located near the Northern State Parkway and Sunken Meadow State Parkway, and served by the Long Island Rail Road via the Port Jefferson Branch. Traveling to or from the city by car takes about an hour and 23 minutes to an hour and 55 minutes via the Northern State Parkway or Long Island Expressway.

Beaches & Parks

Suffolk County’s Berkeley Jackson County Park is 130 acres of hilly terrain with some remnants of sand quarries on the west side and flat lands on the east side. Its main attraction is the 1.8-mile trail for hiking, observing nature and dog-walking. The park is located east of Manor Road, north of Jericho Turnpike, and is adjacent to the Manor Farm Park. In 2000, Huntington Town purchased Manor Farm Park to serve as a trailhead and connect the Town Manor Road Park and Berkeley Jackson County Park.

Coral Park is a 2.8-acre active recreational and fitness-themed park located along Broadway. Its facilities include a workout area with six stations for adult cardio exercise equipment, and a half-mile jogging path. The playground is suited for toddlers and older children, and has play equipment that aids in the development of upper body strength. The park has a covered pavilion with picnic tables and benches, game tables, a basketball court, parking lanes and a spacious open lawn area.

Elwood Park is a popular active park that features various athletic facilities, such as a softball field, two tennis courts and a handicapped-accessible bocce court. It has a playground, picnic area and comfort station that are also handicapped-accessible. The park is home to the Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo Memorial Spray Park, and located in the heart of the community on Cuba Hill Road.

Manor Plains Nature Park is a 12.1-acre passive park located west of Manor Road, next to the 5.6-acre Old Field Preserve. It has a .3-mile loop trail for taking peaceful hikes and observing nature, and a 7-foot deep man-made pond. The pond and its surrounding fields are great areas for spotting various wildlife species and wildflowers.
