Local Area Information

Farmingdale is an incorporated village in the Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York, along the Nassau-Suffolk County line. It gets its name from a general store built in the community known then as Hardscrabble by Ambrose George, a land developer who bought a large plot of land in anticipation of the construction of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the 1830s. He named the store Farmingdale, and when the LIRR began operating in October 1841, the train stop adopted the same name.

The Farmingdale, NY 11735 ZIP code is linked with some unincorporated areas outside the village borders including South Farmingdale and East Farmingdale, which both use the same ZIP code and have Farmingdale as postal address. Bethpage State Park, well known for its golf courses and within a 10-minute drive from the village, is in Old Bethpage but uses Farmingdale as its mailing address. Farmingdale’s welcome sign on Main Street is in South Farmingdale and is more than a mile from the village bounds.

One of the earliest developments in Farmingdale is Lenox Hills, which dates back to circa 1920 and was built on land adjacent to an 18-hole golf course known then as Lenox Hills Country Club and known today as Bethpage State Park. Along with the subsequent adjacent subdivisions, that area is considered the more upper-class section of the village with pricier homes.

Besides single-family homes, Farmingdale also has multifamily dwellings and co-ops, such as Fardale Gardens, Bethpage Park Apartments and Elizabeth Gardens. Many houses are rental properties or are as large as 4-bedroom homes or larger. Some homes include master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features and amenities. The varied range of property options also include potential mother-daughter, 55+ communities, including Lydia’s Place, a number of luxury homes and vacant lots.

Celebrations are big when the community holds annual holiday parades and other festivities, such as Columbus Day. Also held annually on the first weekend of September is the Runner’s Edge Main Street Mile, in which elite runners from various parts of the country compete.
