Flanders NY Homes for Sale

Flanders is one of the several neighborhoods in the Town of Southampton on Flanders Bay at the mouth of the Peconic River. It is best known for the famous Big Duck, a national historic landmark, and is home to a number of breathtaking county parks and preserves offering a range of leisure activities and inspiring an active outdoors lifestyle.

Local Area Information

Flanders is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the northwest Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It is nestled on the East End’s South Fork, right where it splits with the North Fork on Flanders Bay at the mouth of the Peconic River, which marks the area’s northern limit and forms its jagged shoreline. The rest is bounded by Hampton Bays on the east, Westhampton and East Quogue on the south and Riverside on the west.

Residential areas of mostly single-family homes lie primarily in the northwest portion of Flanders and along the north-south Pleasure Drive. The vibrant property market includes stunning waterfront homes with private docks and amazing water views of Reeves Bay. There are also a number of 4-bedroom homes, new constructions, rental properties and homes with pools, first-floor bedrooms and other features. A substantial part of the hamlet is occupied by the pine barrens and glorious vast parklands, many of which are county-owned.

Flanders became a notable stopover not only for tourists but also motorists in general when the popular Big Duck was moved to its current location on Big Duck Ranch. The historic building gave birth to the “duck architecture” genre, in which any structure shaped like the product it represents is called a “duck.” It is one of the last vestiges of the prosperous duck farming industry in the area and other eastern Suffolk County communities and is now a national historic landmark that gets lighted annually during the holidays.

On Flanders Road, west of the Big Duck, is a convenience store, café and a handful of deli shops, and due east is a gas service station. Residents are just a bridge away and no more than a 15-minute drive to Downtown Riverhead for a wealth of shopping options and fine restaurants, while a little farther on the North Fork are the first-rate wineries and gorgeous Long Island Sound beaches. The hamlet’s western and central sections use the 11901 ZIP code, while those generally in the east use 11946.

The preserve is also open for seasonal hunting with permits for small and big game.

Hubbard County Park encompasses 1,815 acres of undeveloped property with a blend of prairie and beach grass, a canopy of pine trees, and other natural environments. It is home to an extensive variety of wildlife, and has facilities for canoeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, and freshwater fishing at Penny Pond. Shoreline fishing is also possible via the picturesque footpaths around the pond’s edges.

Sears Bellows County Park is the southeasternmost component of the Long Island Pine Barrens within the Flanders area. It offers various types of leisure outdoor activities, such as bird watching, picnicking, and seasonal waterfowl hunting.
