Local Area Information

Franklin Square is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on Long Island, New York. It is bounded by the villages of Garden City and Stewart Manor on the north, Elmont on the west, Garden City South and West Hempstead on the east as well as North Valley Stream and Malverne Village on the south.

In 1926, the Franklin National Bank opened in the area and eventually became one of the largest banks in the country. It paved the way for many banking innovations, such as the credit card, installment loan and walk-up window. It was housed in an American Colonial style structure that became a local landmark and made it to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Franklin Square was completely built in the early 1950s and has many pre-war houses, mostly made of brick. Typical are single-family homes in Cape and ranch styles, many of which sit on 40-by-100 or 60-by-100 feet lots. Houses vary from 1-bedroom rental properties to 4-bedroom homes to properties with 6 or more bedrooms, including duplexes and other multifamily dwellings.

A number of homes feature first-floor bedrooms, private pools as well as other amenities and architectural highlights. The great variety of real estate inventory also includes luxury homes, new constructions, mother-daughter houses with income-providing apartments and some multi-unit housing sites. Much of the community uses the Franklin Square, NY 11010 ZIP code, and the rest uses either 11003, 11580, 11001 or 11552.

Franklin Square is home to many good restaurants that line Hempstead Turnpike and a few other commercial streets, such as Franklin Avenue, New Hyde Park Road and Dogwood Avenue, alongside shops, utilities and professional offices. More shopping options are available in Long Island’s largest mall, Roosevelt Field, just roughly 15 minutes away in Garden City. The Community League of Garden City South, Inc. and the Franklin Square Civic Association both strive towards maintaining and improving the community’s quality of life.
