Gilgo Beach NY Homes for Sale

Gilgo Beach is a tiny oceanfront community on Jones Beach barrier island in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Its northern and southern coasts lie respectively on the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, both of which offer plenty of glorious water views and recreation.

Local Area Information

Gilgo Beach is an unincorporated community on Jones Beach barrier island on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is in the southwest corner of the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County along the Nassau-Suffolk County line. Gilgo Beach is also a census-designated place (CDP), which used to be part of the Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree CDP prior to the 2010 census.

When the Ocean Parkway construction reached the Gilgo community, many of the single-family homes were in the way and had to be relocated, possibly to present-day Cottage Walk. The Gilgo portion of the parkway opened in 1931, making the area accessible by car. Before the decade closed, the Jones Beach expansion forced the relocation of High Hill Beach residents, over half of whom chose West Gilgo Beach over Tobay Beach and formed the West Gilgo Beach Association.

The community’s north and south shores are lined with lovely beaches and several waterfront homes with impressive water views of the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area is adjacent to the aquatic and marina facilities of Tobay Beach to the west and the hamlet of Oak Beach to the east. Gilgo Beach uses the 11702 ZIP code.

The entire region stretches from West Gilgo Beach, a small private gated community in the west, to Gilgo State Park in the easternmost end. In the middle is a small neighborhood also named Gilgo Beach, which is the site of Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach Inn, an iconic decades-old snack bar and restaurant. No residential homes occupy Cedar Beach and is instead occupied by a public beach, marina and golf course, and is adjacent to Overlook Beach to the east.

Gilgo Beach is around 50 miles southeast of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Bellmore Station and Wantagh Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch. Driving to or from the city takes roughly an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and 45 minutes. The hamlet is accessible via the Meadowbrook and Wantagh State Parkways to the west and the Robert Moses Causeway to the east. The Ocean Parkway runs throughout the length of the island and connects the three causeways.

Beaches & Parks

Cedar Beach is a popular, large recreational facility that occupies an eastern region of Gilgo Beach, from the Great South Bay to the north to the Atlantic Ocean to the south. It is one of the Town of Babylon’s three ocean beaches, along with Overlook Beach and Gilgo Beach, which has a marina. The Cedar Beach amenities include an ocean-facing beach with about a three-quarter-mile shore, for swimming, surfing and bodyboarding. The Cedar Beach Hut offers a pavilion, along with food, drinks and live music.

Gilgo State Park offers magnificent views and a serene atmosphere, as well as surf fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, which teems with salt-water varieties, especially in autumn when the striped bass species migrate. The park is left in an undeveloped state but is constantly monitored to protect its natural resources and inhabitants, like the piping plovers and sea beach amaranths. Gilgo State Park is located on the eastern end of Gilgo Beach, fronting the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Great South Bay to the north.
