Glen Head is a neighborhood in the northwest Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. After about a century of remaining a sleepy backwater, it is now a bustling community with some of the most impressive homes in a diverse range of architectural styles and features, a flourishing economy, desirable schools and recreational parks.

Glen Head is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay, a third of the townships in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. It is regarded as one of the regions in the greater Glen Cove area anchored by the city of Glen Cove immediately north of the hamlet. It is bounded by Sea Cliff Village and Glenwood Landing on the west and the villages of Old Brookville and Matinecock on the south and east, respectively.

Glen Head was once included in a larger territory referred to as Cedar Swamp for the abundant cedar trees in the area. Because of its hilly terrain, that section remained uninhabited for about a century until the Duryea cornstarch factory arrived and attracted workers, many of whom became the area’s settlers. When the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) reached the neighborhood, the station was then the railhead of the line to Glen Cove and hence was called “Glen Head,” the name the post office adopted when it was established in 1874.

Today, Glen Head is a thriving, serene community with a population of less than 5,000 in the 2020 US Census, making it the fourth least populous among all the CDPs in Oyster Bay Town. It was ranked among Long Island’s wealthiest by Newsday’s property value listings and has a robust market of lovely homes in different housing styles, such as Capes, Colonials and mid-century modern architecture.

Despite the significant growth, Glen Head retains a rural, small-town feel with its winding, tree-lined roads and the occasional farm stands and barns. Residential zones contain primarily single-family homes and some co-ops, one of which is the private gated community of The Knolls of Glen Head. Properties range from 1-bedroom rentals to 4-bedroom homes to larger luxury residences and may offer first-floor bedrooms, private pools and other features and amenities. There are also new constructions and undeveloped vacant lots.
