Glenwood Landing NY Homes for Sale

Glenwood Landing is a quiet suburban neighborhood bestriding the townships of Oyster Bay and North Hempstead on Long Island, New York. It became historically significant as a shipbuilding area for 19th-century ships, a few of which still exist today, a sought-after resort and recreation destination for celebrities and other vacationers at the turn of the 20th century as well as an important energy production site with an architecturally significant power station for over 100 years.

Local Area Information

Glenwood Landing is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. It is mostly in the Town of Oyster Bay with a small southwest corner area in the Town of North Hempstead. It is adjacent to Sea Cliff Village to the north, Glen Head and Old Brookville Village to the east and Roslyn Harbor Village to the south, while the waters of Hempstead Harbor wash against its western edges.

The one-square-mile area had a flourishing shipbuilding industry supported by its harbor location since the 1700s. The Stephen Taber, USA’s oldest non-motorized topsail schooner in continuing service today, and the Christeen, the country’s oldest oyster sloop, were both built at the A.W. VanCott Shipyard in 1871 and 1883, respectively. They are just two examples of Glenwood Landing’s 19th-century ships that still exist today, and both were designated as National Historical Landmarks in 1992.

Glenwood Landing was well known for the large power-generating facility that was once the most imposing structure in the area. Its harbor location and rustic charms attracted many seasonal visitors in the first half of the 20th century, during which the hamlet had several waterfront hotels and inland rental cottages.

Today, Glenwood Landing remains a quiet, safe suburban neighborhood of mostly year-round single-family homes and condos, like the ones at The Residences at Glen Harbor. It is a gated community offering resort-style living with its luxury homes, many of which are waterfront properties with two or more bedrooms on first floor, and community pool among other modern amenities. Properties in the area vary from 2- to 3-bedroom homes or larger and include new constructions, vacant lots and rentals.

Residents are served by the Glenwood Landing Fire Department, established in 1907, and the Glenwood Landing United States Post Office on Glenwood Road, along which other services, shops and establishments are also located. Areas in the community use either the 11547 or 11545 ZIP code.
