Greenlawn NY, Homes for Sale
Greenlawn is in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Its small-town charm and feeling of community appeal to many, who are also drawn to the area’s serene ambiance, affordable single-family homes and apartments, walkable downtown, picturesque parks, preserves, and playgrounds, as well as other family-centered attractions.
Local Area Information
Greenlawn is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Its neighbors include the hamlet of Huntington to the west, Centerport to the north, East Northport to the northeast, Huntington Station to the southwest, and Elwood to the southeast. A little farther south are the hamlets of South Huntington and Dix Hills.
The single-family homes along the tree-lined streets of Greenlawn are in a mix of architectural styles on lots that range from a quarter of an acre to an acre. Some oversized newer custom-built luxury homes with a pool are mostly in the woodsy northern area, such as along Arbutus, Old Field, and Stony Hollow Roads. There are also a number of rentals, and the homes for the 55 plus in Paumanack Village, the first housing of its kind developed by Huntington Town, are clustered next to the Greenlawn Plaza shopping center downtown.
Surrounded by rolling hills, the downtown area is more level and very walkable. Along with Broadway, Pulaski Road is home to a variety of boutiques, pizzerias, salons, and other shops and services. Many of the establishments are homey mom-and-pop shops that rarely change hands, thus Greenlawn retains a small-town feel despite having bigger chain stores. Besides affordable homes and the shopping, the community offers all the other essentials and perks a family might need, including good schools, parks, and playgrounds.
The Greenlawn, NY 11740 ZIP code is noted for its Pickle Festival, a tradition held annually at the John Gardiner Farm, right where the pickle industry started in the 19th century. The farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. When the farm is open, families could buy fresh produce and take part in the various festival activities.
Much of the area is served by the Greenlawn Fire Department, founded in 1902. The annual Greenlawn Fireman’s Fair, the oldest and longest-running in New York State, is held on Labor Day weekend. The northern tip and southernmost section are served by the Centerport and Huntington Manor Fire Departments, respectively.

The Edwin and Gertrude Grace Nature Preserve is a 23-acre thickly-forested park with a hiking trail of almost half a mile. Its other attractions include a charming, historic log cabin with a porch that offers a picturesque view of the Centerport Harbor. There is also a Japanese-style landscaped stroll garden with moss-lined trails and mountain laurels blooming in late spring. The forest itself is a great place for observing nature with the variety of plant and wildlife species featured in the area.
Formerly known as Little Plains Park, Gardiner Farm Park has a short-looped trail that winds through a wooded area, which is home to many types of birds. At one end of the trail is a grassy area with a small playground and tennis courts. Located on Little Plains Road, off Park Avenue, the woodland park was once part of the adjacent John Gardiner Farm. It is also the site of the farmhouse where several generations of Gardiners lived, which today is a museum complex with a small working farm.
The Greenlawn Skatepark is a 9,200-square-foot facility for skateboarders, rollerbladers, scooter riders and BMX bikers from beginner to advanced skill levels. It was designed in part by users, and features different types of challenges, including grind boxes, rails, ramps, spines, sub boxes, wedges, quarter pipes, and half pipes of various heights, with some up to eight feet high. The facility is part of Greenlawn Park and is located at the junction of Broadway and Cuba Hill Road.
