Hampton Bays, NY Homes for Sale
Hampton Bays is located in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, and is one of the communities that comprise the South Fork of Long Island’s East End. Surrounded by no less than three bays on the north and south, the area is an oasis for boating enthusiasts and aficionados of water sports, such as swimming, paddleboarding, windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Local Area Information
Hampton Bays is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County’s Town of Southampton on the South Fork of Long Island, New York’s East End. Its neighbors include East Quogue and Flanders to the west and Shinnecock Hills to the east. It is surrounded by three bays: on the south are Shinnecock and Tiana Bays, which are components of the Great South Bay, and on the north is the Great Peconic Bay. These waterways facilitate the area’s transportation, tourism and trade.
Hampton Bays includes a strip of Westhampton Island to the south across the bay, between East Quogue’s Hot Dog Beach to the west and Shinnecock Inlet to the east, which was formed by a 1938 hurricane and is a popular fishing channel today.
Though many consider this year-round community a part of the ritzy summer destination referred to as “the Hamptons,” Hampton Bays along with the other Southampton Town hamlets and villages west of the Shinnecock Canal is technically not. But it does have a number of offerings that rival some of the Hamptons’ best: fine white sand beaches, captivating bay and ocean views and waterfront restaurants serving the freshest seafood, all at more affordable prices and attracting many seasonal visitors to the area.
Compared to the Hamptons, residential districts are made up of generally less expensive single-family homes and over 30 multifamily housing sites, including co-ops and condos, among which are those at Ponquogue Point. Many houses are rentals and have master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features, and because the land is practically surrounded by water, it offers more waterfront properties with open water views of the bay than any other Hamptons area.
The neighborhood has plenty of 4-bedroom homes, though some can be as large as 6-bedroom dwellings, such as some luxury residences. Other real estate options include new constructions, potential mother-daughter, horse properties, undeveloped vacant lots, legal accessory apartments and historic properties. The community uses the Hampton Bays, NY 11946 ZIP code.
