Hempstead is an incorporated village located in its namesake Town of Hempstead, a third of Nassau County’s townships, on Long Island, New York. It adjoins the village of Garden City to the north, Uniondale to the east, West Hempstead to the west, as well as Rockville Centre Village, South Hempstead, and Baldwin respectively to the southwest, south, and southeast.

In 1644, the area became the first English settlement in what would become Nassau County, and was given a name that is possibly derived from the town of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, England, whence many of the settlers came. As the population grew, the area’s central location led to its growth as an important commercial center on all of Long Island. In 1853, it became the first community in the then Queens County to incorporate as a village.

Hempstead’s retail industry went into a period of decline during the 1970s and 1980s recessions, but the 1990s saw the redevelopment of the village into a government center and the revitalization of its commercial districts. Today, the community is enjoyed for its host of shops, restaurants, and a diversity of other businesses and services. In the 2020 U.S. Census, it had a population of 59,169, the largest population not only among the villages in Hempstead Town but also among the 96 villages on Long Island.

Traveling to or from the city takes about 58 minutes to an hour and 17 minutes via the Cross Island Parkway or Grand Central Parkway.

The Hempstead Village Department of Parks and Recreation maintains several parks, including Brierley Park, which features a basketball court, playground, and an indoor gym. There is also Campbell Park, which is home to a soccer field and basketball court as well.

Lincoln Park is another notable recreational spot with its soccer field, basketball courts, and playground, as is Mirschel Park, which offers similar facilities. Kennedy Memorial Park, the largest among the village parks, is popular among the locals and has the most number of facilities, such as athletic fields and courts, swimming pools, picnic areas, a roller skate area, playground, and more.
