Hewlett Harbor is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It makes up a group of five communities collectively called the Hewletts, which also comprises Hewlett and the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck, and Woodsburgh. The Hewletts, Lawrence Village, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, and Inwood are the “five” components of an unofficial grouping of communities referred to as the Five Towns.

Like the rest of the Hewletts, the village is named after the large and prominent Hewlett family that were among the area’s first settlers, one of which was John Hewlett, who farmed in the area and whose livestock utilized the lovely Willow Pond as a watering hole.

In 1914, famed lawyer Joseph Auerbach purchased a large tract of land in what would become today’s Hewlett Harbor. He constructed a summer home, and in the process unearthed the remains of a Native American tribe chief, which was buried with “Sewan,” the Indian term for copper beads. He then established a country club for the benefit of his friends and named it Seawane Club, after the beads. In the 1920s, he sold the club, whose new owners subdivided and developed the excess land for single-family homes.

The community was incorporated as a village in 1925, and today has approximately 439 attractive and unique homes. Besides the Seawane Club and the Village Hall, the area is composed of largely luxury homes, many of which are waterfront properties with amazing water views and a pool, as well as a few remaining vacant lots.

The village is about 20 miles southeast of Manhattan, New York City, and served by the Hewlett Station via the Far Rockaway Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Travel time to or from the city by car is about an hour to an hour and 26 minutes via the Cross Island Parkway or Grand Central Parkway.

Beaches & Parks

The Seawane Club is a private membership club with such amenities as an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, basketball and pickleball courts, and a swimming pool, and is also a lovely wedding venue.

Grant Park in nearby Hewlett is a 35-acre Nassau County recreational and sports facility. Besides the athletic fields and courts, as well as the ice skating rink, the park also has multi-use paths, fitness stations, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a spray pool. It also allows fishing on half of the Grant Park Pond, while the other half is closed to help maintain its quality.
