Inwood is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on western Long Island, New York, and often confused with the neighborhood of the same name in the Manhattan borough of New York City. Nassau County’s Inwood is part of an informal grouping of communities called the Five Towns.

Inwood is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on western Long Island, New York. It is encompassed in an informal grouping of communities known as the Five Towns, which is also made up of Woodmere, the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst as well as the Hewletts, which comprise the neighborhood of Hewlett and the villages of Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck and Woodsburgh.

First settled in the 1600s, the area was referred to as Near Rockaway, just like some of the nearby communities on the Rockaway peninsula because of their relative proximity to the Hempstead settlement. Among these communities, Inwood was the first to be given its own name in 1663, which was North West Point. The name was taken from its geographic location relative to the central portion of Far Rockaway, which it was part of.

In 1871, following the American Civil War, the hamlet was renamed Westville. When the locals petitioned for the establishment of a post office, it was learned that a town also named Westville already existed in upstate New York. Needing another name change, in 1888, the community adopted the name with the most votes, Inwood.

Today, residential districts in Inwood comprise single-family homes and multifamily properties that are commonly more modest than the ones in the other Five Towns communities, though they vary to include 4-bedroom homes and grander houses with 7 or more bedrooms, like some duplex units. The spectrum of real estate options also includes a number of rental properties and new constructions.

The neighborhood is approximately 20 miles southeast of Manhattan in New York City and served by the Inwood and Lawrence Stations via the Long Island Rail Road’s Far Rockaway Branch. A car trip to or from the city takes about an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and 26 minutes via the Grand Central Parkway, Cross Island Parkway or Long Island Expressway. Beaches & Parks

One of Nassau County’s parks, Inwood Park, is nestled within the area. The beautiful 16-acre waterfront park is home to several modern facilities, such as a ballfield, basketball courts, tennis courts, a roller rink, playground, picnic area and walking/jogging path. It also has a boat launch providing access to the South Shore Blueway Trail for non-motorized boats.

At least three of Hempstead Town’s recreational facilities occupy the community. Inwood Marina has an assortment of amenities that include a boat launch, boat slips and a picnic area. Pearl Street Park features a basketball and playground, while Terrace Gardens Park has game tables, a playground and courts for playing handball, shuffleboard and tennis.

The Five Towns Mini-Golf and Batting Range is a notable outdoor entertainment facility with its classic arcade room, batting range, 18-hole mini golf and target paintball. It also hosts parties and group events.

The Inwood Country Club is best known for its 18-hole golf course listed by the New York Times in the “15 Best of The Best” among Long Island’s over 125 golf courses. Its offerings also include a remarkable tennis program and the private Inwood Beach Club on the Atlantic Ocean in the village of Atlantic Beach.

The Schools

Inwood is in the Lawrence Union Free School District, which has six public schools. Three of the district schools — Lawrence Primary, Lawrence Kindergarten and Lawrence UPK — are located in the hamlet. Lawrence High School is in Cedarhurst Village, while Lawrence Middle and Lawrence Elementary Schools are in Lawrence Village.
