Island Park is a village located on a small island also named Island Park in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It offers immaculate beaches, boating, fishing and some of the most desirable waterfront homes in the county.

Island Park is an incorporated village in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Along with the communities of Barnum Island and Harbor Isle, with which it shares the 11558 ZIP code, it is located on a small island also named Island Park connected by roadways to the hamlet of Oceanside on the mainland and a six-lane drawbridge to Long Beach City on the eponymous barrier island.

Originally named Hog Island and then Barnum Island in honor of Peter C. Barnum’s widow who bought and sold the island to the county, it was later renamed Island Park, which is derived from the Island Park-Long Beach Corporation that bought the land in 1921 and developed it into a resort destination. Beginning with a meager fifteen homes, there were nearly a thousand properties by the time the central part was incorporated as a village in 1926. Harbor Isle and Barnum Island were not incorporated since they had fewer fishing shacks.

The cool breezes from the surrounding waters made Island Park a great summer resort getaway, and eventually, some seasonal inhabitants became year-round residents. Summer bungalows and other homes continued to be built in the 1920s, and a small business center developed on Long Beach Road near the rail depot. Some residents who highly value its pristine beaches, boating, fishing and other water recreation kept primary homes in other neighborhoods and used their dwellings in the village in the summer.

Today, larger single-family homes and multifamily residences have replaced a number of the summer bungalows, and the village has plenty of 4-bedroom homes and waterfront houses enjoying splendid water views. The vast array of options in Island Park’s housing stock also include new constructions, rental properties, luxury homes and dwellings with master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features. There are also condos, such as The Yacht Club, potential mother-daughter and undeveloped vacant lots.

Mayor Landgraf Park is a popular spot for the local children as it is predominantly a fenced playground featuring a swing set, slides, climbers, game tables, a fire truck play equipment and colorful murals throughout the play area.

Masone Beach on the scenic Island Park Harbor is a village attraction that has basketball and handball courts, a playground, splash park, concession, picnic area with barbecues and a gazebo pavilion with capacity for large groups.

The picturesque waterfront recreational facility of Shell Creek Park is nearby on Barnum Island to the east, as is Hempstead Town’s Harbor Isle Beach on Harbor Isle to the west.

The Schools

The village is part of the Island Park School District, which has two public schools serving students through grade 8. One of the district schools, Francis X. Hegarty Elementary, is located in the village, while Lincoln Orens Middle School is on Barnum Island. High school students attend Long Beach High School in the Long Beach City School District.
