Islandia experienced significant development when it became the site of the global headquarters of a company known today as CA Technologies. In 1980, residents presented to the Town of Islip a proposal to incorporate the community with a petition signed by 432 locals, which was way more than the 180 signatures needed. Despite a lot of opposition, in 1985, Islandia officially became an incorporated village, the first to do so on Long Island in 17 years after Lake Grove in 1968.

Islandia lies within Suffolk County near the heart of Long Island, New York. It is one of the Town of Islip’s four incorporated villages, two of which, Ocean Beach and Saltaire, are located on Fire Island across the Great South Bay, and the other is Brightwaters on the South Shore of Long Island’s “mainland.” Islandia is bounded by Hauppauge on the north and northwest, Ronkonkoma on the east and southeast and Central Islip on the southwest.

Informally called South Hauppauge by some, Islandia has residential areas made up of over a thousand households with mainly single-family homes that vary from 1-bedroom to 4-bedroom homes or larger. There are also about five multifamily dwellings, one of which is an age-restricted or 55+ community named the Polo Club at Islandia, a luxurious gated community of mainly 2-bedroom condos with a basement and homes with a garage. The village also offers new constructions and homes with pools or bedrooms on first floor or both.

The village technically has no central commercial district, but locals and visitors are provided with an array of shopping and dining options at Islandia Center. Within the neighborhood itself are a number of shops and services, such as convenience stores, cafés, gas refilling stations, financial centers, a bakery, grocery shop and dollar store. It is also home to several other companies and businesses, including Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel and the Hampton Inn.

Islandia’s central areas are provided with fire protection and rescue services by the Central Islip Fire Department and the rest by either the Lakeland or Hauppauge Fire District. All village areas use the Islandia, NY 11749 ZIP code.

Islandia is approximately 45 miles east of Manhattan in New York City. It is about 15 minutes from the Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma and is served by the Central Islip Station via the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch. Driving to or from the city takes about an hour and 12 minutes to an hour and 51 minutes via the Long Island Expressway, a major thoroughfare that intersects the area.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a 3,473-acre shelter and natural habitat for a variety of interesting plant, fish, and wildlife species. Its amenities include 50 miles of trails for nature hiking, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing, and horseback riding, as well as fly fishing in the Connetquot River.

Lakeland County Park is a 70-acre property that offers a nature trail-boardwalk over the Connetquot River’s headwaters for hiking and bird watching, with fascinating vistas of plant and wildlife species in their natural habitats. Located on Johnson Avenue, this fully accessible park also offers basketball courts, shuffleboard, and a picnic area with gazebo, and is specially designed to accommodate disabled persons and their families.
