Local Area Information

Jericho is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. It is bordered by the villages of Brookville and Muttontown on the north, Syosset on the east, Hicksville on the south, New Cassel and Westbury Village on the southwest and Old Westbury Village on the west. The last three are located in the Town of North Hempstead, though Old Westbury is also partially in Oyster Bay Town.

Lusum, as the area was initially called, has a rich history that involved members of the Society of Friends called Quakers, who mainly farmed in the 1600s. It was renamed Jericho in 1692 after the biblical city in the Promised Land. After the Revolutionary War, peace ensued and so did the growth of farms and businesses, and some of the area’s first known structures and institutions were built and established.

When World War II ended, the population continued to increase and additional schools were built. Other developments followed, such as suburban housing, a water tower, theater, cloverleaf access to Jericho Turnpike, shopping center, a new post office, new fire department and a public library.

Today, Jericho is a highly developed neighborhood with good schools, shopping, dining, recreation and a varied range of housing options. Besides single-family homes, there are also condos in gated communities, such as The Hamlet East and The Hamlet Estates. The latter features luxury homes and several waterfront properties offering captivating water views of a pond.

Dwellings may be as large as 4-bedroom homes or larger and have master bedrooms on first floor, private pools and other features. There are also rental properties, new constructions and vacant lots. Jericho’s boundaries differ from those of both the Jericho Union Free School District and the Jericho Post Office. The latter includes a section of Jericho in the Westbury, NY 11590 ZIP code and a section of Muttontown in the Jericho, NY 11753 ZIP code.
