Laurel NY Homes for Sale

Laurel is a coastal hamlet in the southwesternmost Town of Southold, Suffolk County, on the North Fork of Long Island’s famed East End. This small community of about 1,400 year-round residents is blessed with the bounties of nature, including scenic beaches on the Great Peconic Bay, prolific vineyards, rolling golf courses and the spectacular Laurel Lake Preserve.

Local Area Information

Laurel is an unincorporated neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County on the North Fork of Long Island, New York. It is the first community along Route 25 in the Town of Southold and is also partially located in the Town of Riverhead. It is bordered by Jamesport and Northville on the west and Mattituck on the north. The southern coast looks out on the Great Peconic Bay on Long Island’s longest river, the Peconic River.

Originally named Middle Ground for its location between the townships of Riverhead and Southold, the area was renamed Franklinville in 1832 when the Franklinville Church and Academy were founded, possibly as a tribute to Benjamin Franklin and his historic carriage drive along Route 25, also known as Main Road. When the post office was established in 1898, it was learned that another Franklinville village existed in upstate New York, hence the hamlet was renamed Laurel after its most notable water feature, Laurel Lake.

Residential zones contain about 800 housing units, many of which are single-family homes, and plenty have one or two bedrooms on first floor. Waterfront homes with picturesque water views of the bay line the shore, and luxury residences with pools on huge lots grace the landscape.

House sizes vary from 1- to 4-bedroom homes, which may be rentals, new constructions or potential mother-daughter or offer legal accessory apartments. A number of beautiful 19th-century homes, such as the 1850 Skidmore-Penny-Boucher house, the circa 1872 Italianate-style Austin Penny house, the 1890 Mees-Sause house and the pre-1858 Albin-Young-Fanning house, are located primarily along the semi-rural Main Road.

Laurel is among the communities in the country’s designated grape-producing region referred to as the North Fork of Long Island AVA (American Viticultural Area), which comprises about 3,000 acres of verdant vineyards and more than 40 wineries. Thus, part of its attractions are the local wineries, including the Ev&Em Vineyards on Main Road. Much of the hamlet uses the 11948 ZIP code, and the rest uses 11952.
